Dumb idea or not? by si88

I know that this is probably a dumb idea so I thought I'd post it here to see who might give a reply. I just purchased a 2006 Pacifica FWD with heated leather and the 6 disc CD/DVD player as the only options. We couldn't find one in town with the few options we wanted (side air bags, auto hatchback, rear park sensor) that was not fully loaded and priced out of our range. So its been bugging me ever since I did all this research but couldn't find the car we wanted and had to settle on this one.

So now I find a used 2005 AWD that has all the above desired options with just under 30K miles on e-bay thats 500 miles away. My dumb idea is to offer a trade for the used pacifica for my brand new 2006!?! I know I am probably an idiot for thinking about this but I am not very happy with the base model we purchased. Plus I know I'll probably take a bath by losing out the on the warranty and the residual value, but I really want those options.

Can someone please talk some logic to me?

It's an unusual thought, but I don't think it's dumb. If the car you want is a year old . . . so what. It's basically the same car, just one year more mature and you're getting what you wanted in the first place.

I'm in a similar boat. I'm trading a 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee with 5K miles on it for a 2005 Pacifica with 16K on it. The Jeep is so uncomfortable I just can't drive it any more.

We have a Pacifica and a Subaru Forester. Both are great cars they we love dearly. Our Pacifica ride qulaity is up to par with any Toyota or Lexus that I drove; very quiet and smooth. Granite, it is not a Lexus, but the suspension is very smooth. We drove it Florida this past summer and loved the ride.

You know when you drive long distances in some vehicles, you seem to get fatigued, we never got this with the Pacifica. Gas milage is pleasently good for a vehicle this size. We get actual 19 mpg in a stop an go city driving, and got actual 27 mpg on I-75 going to Florida.

With some feature from Mercedes-Benz, the interior has a European style to it and ride quality is difficult to beat. The versitility of the Pacifica is great as well, with the back folded down, it has tons of cargo room. The second row seats, can adjust forwrd or backward, giving great leg room.

Some minor drawbacks, some blind spots, making backing up a little more difficult. You have to take a little more time, instead of whipping it in to a spot.

I would highly recommend the Chrystler Pacifica for a family car, but it is a bee-bopping car, like our Forester either. It all depends what your looking for. The Pacifica, also comes in optional AWD, which, I feel, if youe getting one, to get with it.

Unless you live in the snow-belt, I don't agree that AWD is necessarily better. It costs more, it is much more complex, which usually translates into more problems, it weighs more so your gas mileage and acceleration are not as good as 2WD. Read some of the posts in "Chrysler Pacifica Owners: Problems & Solutions".
Just my opinion...

Just purchased a new 2006 Pacifica AWD. Debating to purchase extended warranty? Does anyone have any insight and cost. The warranty is $1,800 for three additional years with oil changes and all scheduled maintenance included.

Thanks

My wife purchased a new 2005 Pacifica in Sept of 2004. Touring AWD with leather. No heated seats, moonroof, side air bags etc. It is coming up on 9000 miles and its third oil change with no problems. We paid just under $26K for it with an MSRP of 31.5K. I dont like it much, but my wife does. Not big enough in my opinion, but it is smooth and powerful. It came with the 7/70 power trane warranty so I dont think we will be getting an extended warranty. I have a 1999 Intrepid purchased new which I have had very few problems with. Hopefully the Pacifica is even better for reliability.

Living in Houston, Tx. I don't agree that the AWD is worth it. In the Pacifica's case, the extra 150 lbs weight should make any potential owner pause, unless the winters demand it.....

I agree with all of your other comments, though............

we are a family of 5. we've driven the ford expedition for the past 10 years. we are looking for a change.an suv that's not so big, but can fit 6-7 passengers. we are trying to decide between a ford explorer or the chrysler pacifica touring. any opinions out there? we'd like to stay between $30 and $32,000. we do want dvd, leather, power. the acura mdx is too expensive and the volkswagon toureq doesn't seem to have the dvd.

There are only two advantages that I can think of that the Explorer would have over the Pacifica: If you get the standard second row seats in the Explorer, no one would have to sit in the third row if all five members of your family are in the car, which gives you more cargo space. The Explorer also give you the option for seven people, which you don't have with the Pacifica.
Personally, I would much prefer to sit in the third row than in the center of a bench seat. I also think kids are much happier on long trips having their own individual seats. They all have their own air. The ride quality and quietness of the Pacifica are far superior. I'm prejudice, but I feel everything else on the Pacifica is superior, especially its looks, ergonomics and ease of entry and exit. Do you want to blend in or stand out?

What about part time four wheel drive. Why is everything new AWD. I am less concerned about the added weight than about the frictional drag of running the four wheel drive system all of the time. I could be wrong on this, but I do not believe that you can buy a small SUV which is part time four wheel drive, other than maybe the 4runner. Even many of the full size SUVs are going to AWD and then you really pay at the pump. I have a 4x4 Suburban which I have put just over 50,000 miles on. I might have had it in four wheel drive for 100-200 of those miles and that was over four winters in KS and eastern WA.
