I stopped at the dealer yesterday. Salesman was very nice, even after I explained I'm at least 6 months away from buying and just wanted to sit in it to see if I fit. He offered a test drive even after my explanation. In the end, however, the 128 they had was blocked in and I didn't want to trouble them to move all the cars. He said come back anytime during the week and he'd be happy to let me drive it. Anyway, the 128 they had was with premium and auto. I want to test an auto, anyway, to see how it is. SO, sitting in it ... I thought it was a great fit. I'm really surprised at how comfy it was for my 6'5" frame. As a matter of fact, I was just at a Chrysler dealer (shopping for the wife) a couple of hours before and found I did NOT fit in a 300 SRT8! My head rubbed the ceiling. Not the case in the 1-series! I mean, if that ain't a kick in the head, I don't know what is. BMW just knows how to compensate for tall people, it seems, even in the smallest of cars (I fit in a MINI, too). The cockpit was pretty typical bimmer. It just felt "right." Color was redrock metallic (i think that's the name) with black guts. I really liked the color in person. Kind of an orange tint to it. But for $475, I think I'd stick with a base color. Too bad the lease numbers aren't there yet. Crazy high 24-month residual, but a .00275 MF is a tough nut to swallow. I ran the numbers last night and it seems a comparable 328i sedan could be had for $30/mo more. Although, I think I'd still go for the 1-er even at such slim savings. I find it more attractive, and the more compact/balanced package is more appealing to me. I'm looking forward to a test drive.

Replying to: nyccarguy (Mar 25, 2008 6:00 pm) I brought back a leased 2002 325i with a couple of scratches and dings in 2005. They took it back cheerfully with no problems and my spanking new silver 545i was already waiting for me. Unfortunately the 3 years with the BMW V-8 are almost up. What next? To 1 Series or not to 1 Series....that is the question. |

Replying to: qbrozen (Mar 30, 2008 7:25 am) I am 6'2"- mostly legs. I practically got laughed off the Luxury Lounge thread by the active anti-BMW faction there when I posted that I test drove the 2008 328i sedan and the 2008 EX-L Accord sedan and discovered to my surprise that even though the Accord was supposed to offer more driver's seat leg room, I found the 328i MUCH roomier for my legs with quite a bit more seat travel in the 328i. BMW always knows how to accommodate folks like us. I have also tried Acura, Infiniti and Lexus vehicles. Only the BMW's fit me like a glove. This week I have to go try a 128i coupe. My 545i lease is up in July.

I went to the Denver Auto Show over the weekend and sat in a 135i. I'm 5'11" with a 30" inseam on my pants, but normally I have to have the seat all the way back in its travel to be comfortable. The power seats in the car I sat in were working, so I moved the seat all the way back. Found, to my surprise, that I had to bring it forward in order to reach the pedals. Nice!

My point was that there is more room in the front seat of the 1-series than I would have thought, given the overall size of the car. |

I've test driven a few 128s now. It's rapidly becoming a matter of "when", not "if" for me. I did a "lifestyle" test yesterday and brought along my roll-aboard suitcase and my iPod to see whether it really works for me. With the top down, my suitcase went in and out better than in an overhead bin on the plane, and I could probably fit a 2nd one in there. And the iPod was fully accessible through the radio, all my play lists and everything. I did the same tests with the A4 convertible and the EOS yesterday. The iPod interface is laughable on both of those, actually maddening. Sure, they'll play your iPod, but you really can't control what it plays, because it doesn't show you track titles or playlists. With 6000+ songs on my iPod, I'd have been royally pissed had I bought either of those and paid for the iPod connector without trying it. As for storage, the A4 could handle the suitcase with the top down. I could get the suitcase in the EOS with the top up, and it fits with the top down, but I couldn't get it in or out that way. And those practical matters aside, the 128 just has me grinning like a fool when I drive it. The others haven't done that. |

Am a lifelong BMW owner, took a test drive -- honey, they shrunk the 3 series. What a great, sophisticated, heavy, reasonably priced little car... but somebody forgot to laugh when the set the thing up. It's dull.

Replying to: michael_meg (Mar 31, 2008 6:29 am) Its a heavier E30. What I mean is, the interior volume seems almost an exact match of my wife's E30, while the vehicle has gained weight, mostly due to increased crash protection measures since 1987.

Replying to: hpowders (Mar 30, 2008 12:31 pm) Well, you are not alone. I currently drive an Accord EX-L. Although mine is an '06. Even the 1-series offers me a better seating position and more legroom. I have the Accord set almost to its extreme limits. The front of the seat is completey up, the back completely down, and the travel is roughly 1/4" from the furthest setting. When I sat in the 1-series, i had at least 1" further to go back in travel, while still having the front fully up and back fully down. And, on top of that, the steering wheel falls easier to hand in the 1 with the above setting. My arms are more stretched out in my Accord. |
