I have been considering buying a Boxster S for quite some time and like many have said the price is right now. The 2003 models are $10,000 below MSRP. I know that is is a porsche and I've always wanted one but it is very expensive. I don't mind the initial expense to buy the vehicle but how is the maintenance for this vehicle. What should I plan on spending annually for maintenance (I know that there are many factors) and how does Porsche back up the car. I've heard stories that oil changes are $500, tires need to be replaced every 5,000 miles, clutches are $3,000. I don't believe these all to be true but I do want to have an idea what the cost will be to have this vehicle. Any assistance is appreciated. Thanks.

You may not want to lay claim to the gene, but you seem to have the "bug"! Can be fatal. LOL. I certainly don't mean to sound any note of discouragement, just trying for a little perspective on the experience. Like you I prefer paying for pleasure and engagement rather than for the passive and monotonous ambience of, say, a Buick. JW |

true, the "bug" does have a tendency to work its way into your dna, doesn't it? i guess only time will tell how successful that little bug is in winding its way into my central nervous system. i'm only 36 now, so that bug's got years to incubate. since i drive more than 80 miles per day, i prefer that my driving experience also be a pleasurable and engaging one. spending that time in a porsche not only makes the most seemingly monotonous part of my day anything but, it improves the quality of my life. life is, after all, for living. and with all due respect, i must disagree with you on one point. my best friend in high school had a buick. a mustard yellow buick. while it certainly couldn't pull .92g's on the skidpad, it was more than capable of transporting six people (many of them women, luckily) wherever we needed to go. in style. in fact, my friend's car was the transportation of choice. in high school, that's anything but monotonous, my friend. |

After hanging out at the BMW 5 series board for the last few years I am poised to make our first Porsche purchase this year. I know what I want (Boxster w/convenience plus package (Bose, anti-theft, cruise, windstop, colored center caps, CD shelf, bi-xenons, PSM and trip computer) sport seats, heated seats, sport chassis, 18" Carrera wheels and metallic paint) and have actually been out looking for a 2003 Boxster or Boxster S that comes close to my specs. Althought there are some great deals out there it appears that I will have to order this car (like our 2002 530i) to get it equiped the way I want. My local sales person told me that Porsche is cutting 2004 Boxster production in half to keep the supply in line with demand as well as keep the prices up. The best deal I can expect for ordering this car is $3k to $4k off MSRP according to the sales person. My questions are.... 1. has any one recently come across a 2003 Boxster or Boxster S that comes close to the one I want and 2. is $3k to $4k off of a car that will sticker for $55,260 the norm ? Thx. |

Ds2k… You are right about the luscious sound of the engine… it sings in harmony… has that jet-like whir with baritone exhaust. The latter reminds me of a tenor sax. Sometimes I even prefer not to turn on the juke box… would rather hear the music of the engine coming over the shoulder… real sweet when it gets into the alto range above 4K rpm. You asked about my deal… 02, stickered for $56.5K, paid $42, SP, PSM, cruise. My salesman concurs with yours about break-in. Personally, my intuition agrees with the manual and I am deferring to it. Speeds2much… I am also vigilant and carefully choose moments, like anyone who values his license. BTW, my dealer has an 03 S with your name on it… red/gray asking 44.9. You could probably get it for 43. Jwilson1…"What some fail to realize is that oil leaks are, in a P-car, a no-cost option!" I guess this explains why the manual recommends checking oil with every gas fill. I suppose it’s as forthcoming as a company can be. Funny, the Boxster dipstick reminds me of a catheter with stent. What is it, some 40in. long? Wantaboxster2… regarding maintenance costs, you are wise to look into it… not like me… I'll learn as I go along and just pay the piper when necessary. It seems the general consensus is that Boxsters are overpriced. Also, you must pay for routine maintenance, unlike a BMW with which you get 4-yr/50K mi free maintenance. There are other sports cars that offer more "value", but IMO none have the Porsche pedigree in all manner of style and performance. I've been dreaming about one for 30 years now so this is something I really can't put a price tag on. In addition you are very right, this is Porsche bargain time. Last year my salesman told me "Porsche doesn't discount" with that haughty attitude we are all familiar with. Recently he said "I really thought I'd never see this happen." Didn't anyone ever tell him that all things must pass? Jhammell… I'm not up on 04 pricing because it didn't interest me. However, I know you can get an 03 at a really good price… $9K or $10K off sticker… but not with all of the options you listed… leftovers are always a compromise. But if you gotta have it your way, go for it. Chile96… how are those pizza runs going? Get lost yet? My wife is starting to get it, especially when I reminded her that my mother, sister, her sister and a good friend of her's all drive stick and are ogling this baby. If she doesn't come around, that's OK too... I can live with the guy thing! ______ Well I made it to the mileage millenium. Every day when I climb in and fire it up, it's like a teen-age crush... I don't want to work, don't want to go home… just want to drive my butt off. Too bad there's such a thing called reality. Can't wait for that first 60-degree-winter-day anomaly so I can play hooky and lose the top. Hey, a little anecdote… last night on a certain highway entrance I got up to speed quickly and inadvertently overtook a late-model M3 that was loping along. I guess he thought I was spreading testosterone so he got on my tail in a flash. I just pulled over into the right lane, gave him the thumbs-up and "let" him pass. Told myself, boy, you are green-on-the-vine and that's an M3. As Harry Callahan said… a man's gotta know his limitations. I suppose this will be happening quite often. No matter, sprints aren't my bag anyway… I like curves… and as Wolfman Jack used to say—baby, if you got the COYVES, I got da ANGLES! Only 70 days 'til Spring… man, this car rocks and I'm lovin' it! |

| Is that Carmon Red or Guards Red? Carmon is one of my favorites...would be extra sweet on grey. I'm tempted, but will suffer with my X-Type for a while until I have a garage and opportunity for a second car. Lots of interesting stuff going on, but in the Porsche dept. will have to live vicariously through you. ;o) | |

designman, I'd like you well enough just for your citation of Wolfman Jack, even without your new Boxster ... haven't heard anyone appreciate his wisdom in awhile! Checking the oil is a stitch, ain't it? And when the oil's clean, it seems especially hard. Another Porsche tradition -- on some of the older model boards there are folk who've come up with various tricks to change the clarity of the reading on the dipstick! lol JW |

Thanks to designman and jwilson1 for the responses. Yesterday I emailed about 75 dealers in the Southeast (and a bit of the Midwest) what I was looking for in the car. Today at 10:01 AM the phone and emails starting coming and now at 4:00 PM I have heard back from approximately 20 dealers. As thought no one has the exact car but it appears that there may be a few that come close and we are willing to compromise for a significant savings. I have driven a 911 at Road Atlanta and know that there is a difference between the 911 and the Boxster. The 911 is an awesome automobile. We want to have a convertible (since we will sell our '94 Saab 900S convertible to make room for the Boxster) but a new 911 convertible is much more money than we want to spend on a new car. I will keep you posted as to how this turns out. JH |

Ah yes, the Edmund's tradition at work! Good luck. JW |

| Any luck with your search? I agree with you on the 996 cab. Great car, but when compared with a Boxster it's a hard sell. The cab makes sense for someone who simply doesn't care about the money. I can make a case for the 996 coupe, for its driving excellence, but the cab, I don't really get it. | |
