Caribou, That is an excellent point, which brings me to the next question. When you have a total break down of a torque converter due to excessive engine torque being delivered to the tranny, What portion of the converter fails due to this condition? I wouldnt think that the little bit of additional ratio necessary to achieve 75 mph at 2000 rpm would change torque converter load that much, but really not sure. Right now I turn 2000 rpm at 70 mph. Replying to: tnilc99 (May 03, 2009 11:39 am) I don't have the drawing of the transmission with me, but I remember seeing that all three elements of the hydraulic converter are interconnected via wet plate clutches and planetary gears. To speak simply, the intermediate flange/rotor of the coupler sees the total load of the engine when it is 'locked'. The wet plate clutches acting behind/after the converter should be much less sensitive to vibration under torque, comparing to the intermediate rotor of the converter. There was a replacement rotor mentioned by 'winter2' some time ago; this should be the best way to protect your wallet in case you want to add more power. Replying to: caribou1 (May 04, 2009 1:26 am) Caribou believe it or not I fully understand your description of the internal diagram of the converter, and based on that discription I would say that the coupler section of the flange rotor is probably what fails when you here the explanation of a Torque converter sounding like (rocks rotating around in a can) What say you on this??? I sure would like to see a sketch of a cut away view of this beast. I have also heard of something in relation to turbine like fins breaking away internally within the housing.
