First things first, I do live in Alaska does that make much difference on the shipping? I've heard that the dealers pay a flat fee no matter where they are located. I am considering the Murano after test driving the 08 Edge (current offer expires Jan 5, $27,457 for the sport pkg=everything on it except the 20" wheels), 09 Acura MDX (current offer is $36,000-base model, no technology or other pkg available up here), and MANY others but these are the top in my list. The offer I received for the Murano is $36,250 but that seems really high-it has just about everything except for the technology package. I'm seeing prices listed in the lower-48 for quite a bit less... for about the same price as the offer on the Ford Edge. Anyone have any info about these prices? I saw on edmunds that the invoice for the SL is $28k. Doesn't $36k sound like some over-inflated price and that is $3K below msrp according to them.

I'm living in the Pittsburgh area and interested in leasing a Murano SL AWD with the Premium and Leather packages. Considering the Tech package and dual panel moonroof. Here is my initial quote from a dealer... Murano SL with all premium, leather,tech and moon roof. MSRP $36,590 39 month lease 12,000 miles $487.53 per month with $1423.53 due Payment and fees include tax there is nothing extra. What kind of deal could I get if these are my stipulations...no more the first payment down, 39 month lease, 15,000 miles/yr. Any info would be helpful as I am a first time lessee and new to the game. |

(I got close to that). But I don't know whether there are many dealers in the Alaska market to generate competition between them. Or how anxious they are to unload inventory. Your best bet is sending emails to multiple dealers asking them for their best price. If you really do have negotiate in person, be firm (but polite, of course), truthful, tell them you are looking hard at competition (either another Nissan dealer's car, or the Ford Edge), make an offer that would make you choose the Murano over the Edge, and walk if you don't get that price and go get the other car. In 5 of the last 6 cars I have purchased, they did not settle until I had at least stood up, and in one case, I left, and they actually called the next day agreeing to my offer. I was shocked! (but that was a Toyota dealer in 1978...) Another time a Ford salesman stopped my car in their driveway as we were leaving, trying to settle. (but they did not actually have the Mustang model/features I was trying to buy for dear daughter.) You really should run edmunds pricing calculator, or you will never know what kind of deal you are getting. But I would not pay much attention to Edmunds TMV (True Market Value) price column, as I don't think that reflects the reality of the auto market collapse in the last few months. (also note, Nissan invoice prices on Muranos went up on SL AWD models $745 in November, but cars on a dealers lot may have the old price) Good luck. --jayhawk

Replying to: jayhawk70 (Jan 03, 2009 11:49 pm) After doing some more research last night I found that the dealer inflated their quote price on the SL (AWD, leather, sunroof, premium pkg...only missing the technology upgrade) up to $38,800 whereas it was posted on their own website for $35,700 (MSRP). So their "offer" with a $3K discount was super inflated to match the Acura MDX offer. That little bit of info gives me a not-so-good feeling about them, but they are out to make money. They are the only Nissan dealership nearby, the only other is 5-6 hours away in Fairbanks. We're working on getting offers from Minneapolis and Idaho dealerships, I do hope they give us some better numbers that might justify a long road trip.  On thing that does concern me a bit, is the US News ranking of the Murano (#18, reliability 6). They gave a reliability lower than the Edge (#11, reliability 8). I finally dropped the hammer on my purchase of a 2009 Murano LE, deep sapphire with beige leather interior and sunroof. Bought it at Nissan in Chantilly, Virginia. They treated me well and I think I got a good deal. I went there on New Years Eve, the dealership was dead. I ended up getting the car for about $2,800 under invoice, paying $32,800, and after all the taxes, tags, etc, it cost me $34,500 out the door. I financed part of it at 3.9% through Nissan. Overall, it was a relatively good car buying experience. I would recommend Nissan/Chantilly to anyone in the DC metro area.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and the Murano seems to cause a love or hate split, probably because it is so different from the traditional boxy appearance of SUVs. (Personally, I like the Murano a lot - but thats just me... The safety rating is puzzling. I know the Murano is rated 5 stars by the govt for side impact and 4 stars for frontal impacts, so I thought that might be the reason for the slightly lower safety rating, but other cars with much higher ratings had similar federal star ratings. And other cars got very high ratings where US News did not apparently use the federal data at all. Further, US News gave a 9.9 safety rating to the Jeep Grand Cherokee, but stated "The federal government gives the 2009 Grand Cherokee top five-star scores for all seating positions in both frontal and side crash tests. However, it gets only a three-star rating in rollover tests. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gives it a top score of "Good" in frontal offset tests, but a much worse score of "Marginal" in side impact tests."" And US News gave this a 9.9 safety rating! US News does not seem to be at all consistent in the safety evaluations. Reliabilty ratings in this report is another puzzle. They claim to use JD Powers predicted reliability data, but for the Murano and several other vehicles, they show No Data Available for the cars, but give very different reliability ratings for such "no data" vehicles! Very puzzling and very inconsistent. I like the more objective, and consistent Consumer Reports data, which ranks the Murano extremely high in reliability, ahead of most of the vehicles rated higher by this US News reports. (Consumer Reports shows the Murano as 40% more reliable than the average mid-size SUV, and only 3 Toyotas, the Lexus, the Lincoln MKX, and the Honda Pilot having slightly better reliability.) So I think the US News "review of reviews" is far too inconsistent, weights "appearance" equality to safety, and is just flat wrong on its reliability numbers. But that's just me... --jayhawk
