We are long time Nissan owners (Stanza, 2 Maximas, Xterra, and Pathfinder) and expecting #3 and didn’t want to cram 3 carseats in an 07 Maxima. At our last service on the Pathfinder we got an 07 Murano as our free loaner – it fit 3 carseats – no minivan for us!! :o) After reading through the forum my thoughts were we could get a leftover 07 Murano at a great deal plus using the 1.9% APR given there are no incentives on the 09s and not much room to haggle since they are selling very well. Knowing the last weekend of the month was coming and dealers needing to meet monthly sales goals and the 50th anniversary sales, I scoured local dealer websites that showed standing 07 inventory and did the combine internet route directly to the dealers followed up by the “fax attack” to the sales managers. I wasn’t able to find an 07 Murano with the exact options I wanted which happens when you are looking at leftovers. Given Nissan stopped making the 07s back in October combined with the base MSRP on the 09s are $1500 lower, I would think dealers would provide an extremely motivating deal to move standing inventory. The quotes weren’t bad but they weren’t awesome especially if they weren’t too far off of what we would spend on a new 09 using the post that in the DC area, Fitzmall (online) was offering new 09s for $600 under invoice.
Nissan of Chantilly was EXCELLENT – very responsive, professional, no pressure, and happy to work with such an informed buyer. Everything was done via email. Ours salesman gave me a good quote on a leftover 07 but it had Sirius and I wanted XM. He offered to look in the inventory for an 07 with my desired options and found only one in the DC area that was close and said he’d bring it to his dealership. At this point, we were going to go with another dealership due to XM but as were finalizing the details, the GM from that dealership called and said the wrong car was pulled from system and the quote provided was incorrect. The new price was $2400 more. I was not happy about this but it did work out to our benefit. Our salesman from Nissan of Chantilly informed me since they did not have an 07 with XM that I was looking for, they would match the Fitzmall $600 under invoice on any 09 they had in stock. We went in today to purchase an 09 Murano SL AWD with Nav, Premium Package, Tech Package, Leather, Moonroof, Splash Guards, and Floor Mats – MSRP $37,990 and Invoice $34,615. We couldn’t justify spending the price difference between SL and LE for only a few additional items (20” tires, chrome roof rack, wood grain, memory seats, telescoping steering wheel) after adding all the options on the SL.
Apparently the SL we came in to buy had already been sold to another buyer as they were there too. My 07 Maxima trade-in price wasn’t great (given my quote was so good) so I decided to take it to Carmax instead. We ended up walking out of the dealership with a 2009 Murano LE at a great deal. I can’t even tell you how good of a deal I got, it would put them out of business. My advice – the 09 Murano is Nissan’s top selling car right now, do your homework, research prices in your area on this forum and look at local dealers internet prices, know exactly what you want/options, target the end of the month/last weekend as dealers have sales goals to meet, and use the internet and fax to your advantage – it will save you time and money. Not all dealers/areas are offering the 09s anywhere near invoice due to the high demand but they are starting to in some places. Given the state of the economy, I think it will start to make its way to others dealers – just give it some time if it’s not in your area yet.
We had an excellent experience and were in and out quickly; going through the paperwork and finance was a breeze. I highly recommend Nissan of Chantilly if you’re in the market for a new Nissan today. You won’t be disappointed!! Here is the breakdown of our beauty:
2009 Murano SL
Sapphire Blue with Black Interior
Navigation System
Dual Panel Moonroof
Splash Guards
Floor Mats
Destination Charge - $745
Total MSRP - $39,920
Invoice - $36,628
3% VA Sales Tax Plus Tags/Title
Processing Fee - $499 (This is high since MD is only $99 – this is automatic in the contract but you can negotiate lower into the price of the car.) Nissan of Chantilly offers free car wash for life, free lifetime state inspections, concierge to the airport, pick-up/drop off at work for oil changes.)
-I had 5% financing with Navy Federal Credit Union. The dealer was able to beat it at 4.75% with Chevy Chase Bank – we have excellent credit.

My sister has a black on black car in Dallas and she said it is not that bad during the summer - no worse than tan leather and the manager has a black on black and said it's not bad and I loved the look of the car so much i am willing to put up with a little more heat in the summer : )

poohsavybear - They must be getting hungry at Nissan of Chantilly. I was there a little over a week ago and their rock bottom best price was about $200 above invoice. Their sales process was not as above board as some of the other dealers (several back and forth trips to the manager). They did follow up after my visit to see if I wanted the vehicle at the great price they had offered at which point I indicate there were better deals on the table. They didn't seem to have much interest in getting competitive after that. Given their processing fee is the highest in the area, they would need to be close to $900-1,000 under invoice to match other dealers. End of the month must have change their view.
In my vehicle search there are dealers who would go into the $500-$650 below invoice range. Not all dealers were willing, but there are enough that no one in the DC area should be paying invoice or more, at least through the end of March.

fmayberry - I don't know about them being hungry. What I do know is that the ownership of the dealership just changed over within the last week/week and a half. Apparently under the old ownership (Victory Nissan - they also have stores in the DC/VA Beach area) the store wasn't performing up to par not only in sales but in customer service. Nissan actually booted them and asked Hall (reputable Hall Nissan in Hampton Roads - VA Beach, Newport News, Chesapeake, etc. of 35 years) to take over and clean house. Hall had sold his stores in Hampton Roads to Herb Gordon/Mile One (the are also in the DC area). Hall is basically going to work his business process magic he did in Hampton Roads to Nissan of Chantilly and is opening other dealerships in the DC area. He brought one of his GM's from another store who is ranked like #3 within Nissan and that GM has brought much of his staff, etc. which included the salesman and Sales Manager that I worked with. So given the change over has just occurred, I'm sure they are still working out all the kinks/processes, etc. With over a dozen Nissan dealers in the DC/Baltimore metro area - you can find a deal especially at the end of the month touting I can buy the Murano at X dealer for $600 under invoice. Sheehy Annapolis said they were selling their Muranos for $1000 over invoice and if I could get it for $600 under I should go there - which I did. If you walk into the dealership - you should be an informed buyer. A lot of the dealers' online websites give you their internet price so you know what they will sell the car for with room in their holdback. I know that Chantilly's processing fee was high and in my post I recommend you negotiate lowering that into the price of the car especially when MD dealers charge $99. Their contracts are already preprinted with the processing fee but if it's taken into account in the price then it's the same thing. When we made the deal online for the SL - it was for $600 under invoice and matching the $99 processing fee for buying in MD. Given the SL had gotten sold, I was offered an excellent deal on the LE that we would've been stupid to walk away from. Yes it was the end of the month but I was well educated and the Sales Manager was fully aware of it. I didn't "need" to buy the car so I didn't have a problem to walk if I wasn't happy with the deal. But you are right - there are enough dealers in the DC area that are offering the car at/under invoice that others are going to have to follow suit - at least for those of us that are smart/educated by going online and doing research, etc. I'm giving my experience in return as a thanks from learning from everyone else before I conducted my sale. I'm sure doing it at the end of Nissan's 50th anniversary sale also helped. When we bought our 07 Maxima - our best quote was from Passport Alexandria - the Sales Manager told me to get my quotes and he would be the lowest one by $500 - and he did....my contract showed the low price listed as the rebate yet I was still able to use the special APR financing - stipulations usually say one or the other - not both. The dealers can work their magic - there are incentives, etc to the dealer that we don't see other than the holdback which is still just an estimate at 2.75% of MSRP. We bought the Maxima at the end of Nov 2006. One last piece of advice - it's not necessarily how much the dealer makes per car, it's overall sales as well as overall number of cars sold. Based on how the dealership has done for the month, the GM or Sales Manager will have to let some cars go just to meet the "number of cars sold" for the month. Goodluck to all - I can't believe how luxurious our new Murano is!!! :o)

Possible Incentives Offered

What do people think of my logic on this...
Based on reading this forum, it's apparent that one can buy a Murano at or below invoice price fairly easily. Why are they selling at invoice and nowhere near MSRP - because demand is not strong. If demand is not strong - I would think Nissan would begin offering incentives sometime over the next couple months.
I suppose the argument against this is if Murano's are not stockpiling in dealer and mfr lots and are selling at an appropriate rate (albeit at invoice price).

I have the same questions .. I test drove the vehicle and really liked it, then checked out some of the competition such as Highlander, Pilot, Edge and immediately discounted the Pilot and the Edge mostly for fit and finish. I find myself asking why the demand is so low for a seemingly above average vehicle in this class or are sales across the board just dismal in general? When a vehicle can already be purchased at hundreds below invoice without a struggle, what more of an incentive could we expect in April or May? Anyone care to venture a guess or share any rumors?

My guess, and this is pure speculation. I think Nissan wants to make sure that the 2009 Murano lauch is classified as a success, so now that supply is more than adequate, they are rewarding based on sales volume.
Manufacturers report unit sales each month. They don't report gross margin (maybe in their annual reports, but not with monthly sales volume) or average selling price.

It so happens in Mass. one of my local dealers who "offered" to sell me the 09 LE AWD at just about invoice now claims that all over the USA they are selling like hot cakes - well over invoice even over MSRP. If you believe that I've got a bridge to sell you. His boss the general manager tells me leasing is way off because of the low residual and high money factor and yet as of April 1, Nissan rates did not change for leasing. The salesman claims people are willing to lease for mid to high $600's and I cannot fathom that at all. My 05 Murano lease was up 1 month ago but I extended month to month for 90 days hoping something would change. I cannot bring myself to pay over $650/month for a lease on a Nissan, no matter how terrific the vehicle. On the other hand the BMW X3 and X5 also have high money factors - maybe it really is the economy. I looked at the Infinit EX-35 - a dream car ride, fantastic available options and significantly higher priced that the Murano yet great lease deals. I can lease it for 39 mos with 17K and every option available for low to mid $500's paying only $1600 in fees OTD. The only problem is it is just a little too small inside, almost a cramped feeling. The ride is really superb though. The FX also has great deals but the ride is so much rougher. I have never had this much trouble leasing the car I wanted before now.

Oookay, I wanted to report that I ended up getting the Nissan Security+Plus Gold Preferred extended warranty for 7 years or 100,000 miles. It cost me $1,985 (gulp)... which is apparently about $100 over "their cost."
The finance manager told me that the preferred version covered the navigation and stereo, above what just the gold coverage had... so that's what I bought (into).
However, I just looked at the info about the preferred warranty coverage on this web page:
http://www.nissanextendedwarranty.com/warranty/nissan_security_plus.html#nissan_- - - security_plus_gold_preferred
And it shows that preferred really just gives you roadside assistance and a few other bennies that I don't really care about... the navigation and stereo seem to already be covered in just the Gold warranty.
Here is the Gold Preferred warranty detail sheet:
http://www.nissanextendedwarranty.com/docs/Gold-Preferred-New-Vehicle-Service-Ag- - - reement.pdf
And here is just the Gold warranty detail sheet:
http://www.nissanextendedwarranty.com/docs/Gold-New-Vehicle-Service-Agreement.pd- - - f
Somehow I think I got snookered for the extra $200 based upon a "white lie."
Ah, I read in the agreement that I can get a full refund within 60 days of purchase (if I haven't used the service), if I so choose. So what do you all think?
