Back in the early days of Citizen's Band, it was illegal to use a "handle".

It was required at that time to apply for a license. I was only about 12 at the time so my dad did it for me. I remember my (his)call letters were KFA 8094. We couldn't BS much and we were carefully monitored by the FCC. I once got a ticket for "Frivolus Conversation" and another for being off frequency. I had a bad crystal. I had to get the CB certified and signed off and had to mail the info to the FCC.

Years later, I bought a CB for road trips and discovered the FCC had given up. Nothing but garbage, cursing etc, and of course, the "handles".

I sold it at a garage sale a few years ago.

...the same thing as a ham radio?

Ham radios operate on frequecies (UHF?)that have incredible range. You can talk to people all over the world. CBs have a range of a few perhaps 10-15 miles IIRC.

I wonder what I could get for mine on Ebay.

You got that one Mellow Yellow, out.

Licensed Ham operators have a very low opinion of Citizen's Band. It takes a great deal of study and a license to become a Ham operator.

Ham operators can operate at 1000 watts and CB's are limited (I think) to 3 1/2 watts output.

"Someone" I know once keyed up the mike of his ham radio and played a sound effect record of a car crash on Citizen' Band.

At the time there were 23 channels. The car crash was heard that night, I believe, on all 23 channels from LA to San Diego!

Good thing the FCC didn't catch the person who pulled that prank!

I was cleaning out my "parts" room to make room for more parts the other day when I found my old 23 channel CB. It was a uniden mini. In the box was my FCC license! I didn't even remember sending off for it. 'Course much of the 70's are a blurr anyway....so that is not surprising!!!!

Its not that hard to get a ham license...depending what level of priveleges you choose to seek(i.e what frequencies you can talk on) A tech class license(which is what I have) is not all that hard to get. There is definately a lot more involved in acquiring the higher class licenses. Usually local amateur radio clubs will offer classes to prepare you for the test.

I remember my brother back in the 70s getting a Royce 23 channel($$$) CB and having to acquire a license.

Morse Code? Back when I wanted to get a license, knowing MC was a requirement.

Since it all sounded the same to me, I never got a license but used a friends call letters instead.

I quickly became bored with it and lost interest.

It was fun, though being able to open the neighbor's garage door by keying the mike.

The Ham radio was (I think) a Multi-Elmac?

Wow...this is a long time ago, but I think one of my CB's was a Johnson Messenger II and the other one I had was a General MC-5 ?

Or am I dreaming...?

Actually you can get a tech class license either with or without code. When I took my test the code section did not cost any more...so I gave it a whirl despite 0% preparation. I have had my license since 96...and really only use it sparingly at work.

Hi! Many years ago, I was the Red Hot Mama, and I lived in Iowa. It's almost like it was another life I lived before my present one!

I remember "Little Junior," "Ding Dong Daddy," "Droopy Drawers," "Swisher," "Dingaling," "Silver Turtle," and a lot more!
