#2015 of 2861 Re: 2004 Mazda 6, weird smell, noise, breaks [thadson]
Jan 20, 2006 (7:50 pm)
I have 14K on my 2004 Mazda6. It has a weird quiet crankling random noise coming from the dashboard like plastic is settling.
This noise, and the rattling, is probably a dashboard pin that is used to hold the dashboard in place during assembly at the plant, it gets buried inside the dash and isn't removed. There's a way to remove them, do a little digging online to find out how. I know it's out there somewhere...
Also my front alloy wheels ar constantly getting covered with this dark reddish brownish colored dust that I suspect is coming out of the breaks, but is not present on the rear wheals at all... Any ideas?
It's brake dust, and it's a menacing problem with the 6's brake pads. It happens in front because the front brakes work a lot harder than the rears when stopping the car. The front brakes on all vehicles work harder, but it doesn't yield NEARLY as much brake dust as the 6 does.
Besides replacing the pads with an aftermarket brand, the best thing to do is to keep the wheels clean as often as possible. Brake dust that builds up on our alloys will eventually mar and pit the finish.

Clutch chatter has been a problem with manual MZ6s. I experienced the same problem with my '03 starting at around 10,000 miles. I took it to the dealer repeatedly but they could not replicate the problem. Fortunately, Mazda issued a TSB on the issue (see message 1557 on this board). After showing my dealer that posting, and given the paper trail I had established, they did the work and I have not had a problem for about 8 months now.
#2017 of 2861 Replacement tires for Mazda 6 i...
Jan 30, 2006 (9:34 am)
It's time to replace all four tires on my 2003 Mazda 6i. The car has 38000 miles on it and I am thinking of getting Goodyear Assurance TripleTred tires. Anyone else run those on your cars, and how do you like them? Any other opinions out there on this or other tires I should consider?

Even if you're not planning on buying the tires from them, check out Tirerack.com, and enter your make and model year and size wheel. They can also analyze your driving style and recommend to you which type of tires to get.
Having said that, a friend of mine bought a set of the Assurance Tripletreds for his Taurus about 4 months ago, and hasn't stopped bragging about them since! According to him, he gets good dry-weather traction, and they track very well both in rainstorms and blizzard conditions. I don't think you'd go wrong buying them for the 6...
#2019 of 2861 windshield rattling......again!
Feb 03, 2006 (8:49 pm)
Has anyone had their windshield rattle over normal bumps and cracks? I have a 2004 Mazda 6 Sport Wagon S with all the trimmings (except roof racks). I have had the windshield replaced once already at 12,000 miles. Dealer said the windshield has mounting brackets, and one of them was broken! That noise came from the top right corner. Now, the bottom right and bottom left are creaking quite noticeably, and at 26,000 miles! Just curious if anyone has run into this problem. Thanks! -Rob
#2020 of 2861 Excessive tire wear
Feb 04, 2006 (8:12 am)
I have a 2005 Mazda 6 Turbo diesel. At it's recent 12500 mile service I was told it needs 4 new tires due to uneven wear. This apparantly not covered by the warranty as the car has done over 4000 miles. As the car showed no symptoms such as pulling to one side or juddering there was no reason to get it checked, but the check is chargable at £85. The dealer says they can't help and can't guarantee it won't happen again. It is supposed to be very rare for a wheel to go out of alignment, 1 I could understand but not all 4. The rear wheels are worse than the front wheels. I am still waiting for a response from Mazda UK.
Has anyone else had asimilar problem? If so how was it resolved?">

I just got my 6 back from dealer to fix the clutch disc. The shift is now much smoother. There are still a little chatter, but almost not noticeable. I wish it is fixed for ever.
#2022 of 2861 2004 Mazda6 5-speed Transmission problem
Feb 05, 2006 (11:59 am)
My '04 Mazda6 5-speed manual trans "clunks" from gear to gear. It is not only noisy, but sometimes hesitant to shift. I have been to the dealer and they say there are no bulletins out on the trans. They seem sympathetic and want to fix the problem, but don't seem to know where to start. I drove a 2003 used Mazda6 from the dealer's lot with more than twice my miles and it shifted smoother and much quieter than mine. I've never had a manual trans as noisy as this and this is my 16th one in the past 40 years or so. Has anyone else had this problem and if so, what did you do? I want it fixed, because it is the only thing marring an otherwise great car. I don't want to have to make 2 or 3 trips to the dealer because for me it's a 400 mile round-trip. Let me know if there's any help for this, please? Bob
#2023 of 2861 PROBLEM WITH DASHBOARD LIGHTS
Feb 05, 2006 (8:30 pm)
I recently bought a used 2004 Mazda 6 hatchback still under warranty. When i bought it i realized that some of the lights on the dashboard (where the clock, radio, fan lights are) do not light up. I took it to the mazda dealership to have them fix the display since the car is under a full bumper to bumper warranty. They told me that in this model of the 2004 all the lights arent supposed to light up. It doesnt make sense to me and part of me thinks they just dont want to replace the unit. Has anyone see this type of problem before?

Which lights exactly are you talking about? On NA models, there are small indicators at the top of the display that are for the trip computer that's available in the rest of the world, but not here. Otherwise, the clock should be fully functional, as well as the radio/CD display, and the HVAC controls.
If you can tell us exactly what doesn't work, we'll be able to tell you if they're not supposed to, or if you have a genuine problem.
