I am considering purchasing a 2006 Mazda 6 as it is very stylish looking and competitively priced with rebates. However, it seems that the reliability is not very good at all. I do not want to purchase the car and have engine warning lights, odors, etc. On a new car, after the first few "bugs" are worked out, I would hope for almost no problems and this does not seem to be the case. Do present owners have any other comments. I am also considering the Mercury Milan which is based on the same platform

Read my post in the sedans thread.
One more thing... Even though the Milan is on the same platform, it's still a new car, and could very well have first-year issues as well. Just a thought...
Good luck with whatever vehicle you choose, but trust me, you won't regret the 6!

i just bought a 2006 mazda6 5 doors hatchback with the 2.3 5 speed manual, Gt, leather seats, xenon lights!!!
it's a wonderfull car, it's well balanced and mazda modified the 2006. the seats are new(borrowed from volvo), suspension has been upgrade, interior noise is better, the front disk are bigger and fade resistant, I just change a volvo s60 2002 for this mazda6 ...i'm telling you this car is better. I wouldn't recommand the 6cyl. it's an old engine, it will be replace from a global ford engine 3.5liters 270 hp probably next year. The 4 cyl does 40mpg!!! with an above average performance from 4 cyl. You get 0-60 in 8.2, while an Acura TSX 7.9 (cost 5000$ more)
the trunk of the mazda6 hatchback is the biggest of all the sedans!!!

I don't know how you are ac heaving THAT number? I have a 2005 Mazda6 i Hatchback 5-speed, and on the highway, I'm lucky to hit 30mpg.
And the 0-60 on an Acura TSX is 7.2, not 7.9. Read Feb. issue of C&D. Also, 9.4 for the Mazda6 i according to MSN autos.

I also have a 2005 mazda 6i hatch, auto. Just hit 13k miles, best highway mileage i ever got was 27 mpg. Not complaining, since my car's been almost trouble free, and reliable, so far.

My mazda6i auto has been trouble free since day one. 04 and has 34k on the clock. Bose, roof, and sport package with fancy rear view mirror...no leather. My wife drives it daily and I drive it on weekends etc., Only issue was harsh shift that was taken care of with a reprogram. I work on these cars for a living and most of the problems with check engine lights were earlier 03's. As far as gas mileage is concerned, I dont really care....until someone comes out with a car that gets 45mpgs while driving 70 on the freeway, efforts to conserve/make xtra money are best directed elsewhere. My 77 honda civic got pretty good gas mileage but it was hard to keep on the road when other cars passed me, and dont even try to drive in heavy winds!

I have owned a 2004 Mazda6 wagon for over a year now. No problems. I don't like the gas mileage but at present there isn't another vehicle that does what I want that is better. Other than the mileage issue, I really like the wagon.

Jan 20, 2006 (11:06 am)
I have 14K on my 2004 Mazda6. It has a weird quiet crankling random noise coming from the dashboard like plastic is settling.
Also there is a weird chemical smell coming from the front of the car that can be smelled while driving the car, that I can not explain. It is like plastic burning but there is no sign of plastic burning anywhere.
Also when I step on the breaks there is a click coming from the break. I asked the dealer and they brushed it off. Also my front alloy wheels ar constantly getting covered with this dark reddish brownish colored dust that I suspect is coming out of the breaks, but is not present on the rear wheals at all... Any ideas?
