I live in the Memphis area an wanted a Honda CRV-EX-L! I did just like car buying 101 says, get their price first and then discuss what they will give you for yours. After I haggled a price from the dealer over the web, I went in person to make the deal. Well surprise surprise the person I was talking with was not there after saying she would be, so the salesmen I talked with was completely dumb on what I had talked about with the other salesmen, of which the lady sales person had said earlier she had a "folder" on me. When I showed him the price she had sent me by email he was taken a back at the price $24,840 was their quote. I could tell he was very uncomfortable and made numerous trips back and forth to the manager. To make this short the price they offered me for my car was laughable to say the least. I just got up from my chair and left.....

Join the club! when i went in to buy my EX-L AWD I told the dealer I had a quote form another dealer for 26K. The salesman asked me what he had to do to get me to buy the car there. I told him if he could give it to me for $25,800 I'd take it. He goes over to the manager and comes back with a price of $28,411!!!!! Like you, got up and left. Went to another dealer and paid $26,250 with wheel locks, roof rack and mud guards.

If at all possible NEVER trade in your car on a low ball price of a new car or truck. I have purchased 5 new cars in 12 years and only traded in once ( they caved in after i walked ) then one was a pass through with a buyer that i found. The the other three were sold to a private party. The trade in is there only last ditch effort to make make it up the only time it works is if it is a model that is a slow mover or they are stuck on. If you think about it the old game of price and demand. You may meet them in the middle and walk in with the trade in average worth and say i will pay this if you give me this. The trade in no matter what its worth if they cant move it the value is $0.

Good Luck.. M

quote:
Here are detailed sales price and fees:

Selling Price: $22,069.32
Tax (6.25% in Texas): $1,379.33
Deputy Service Fee: $16.50
License/Title: $74.30
State Inspection: $21.75
Documentary Fee: $50
Dealer's Inventory Tax: $50.80

Total: $23,662
/quote

You beat me by around $250 (also Texas):

2008 EX 2WD Non-Nav
Selling price - $21979
"paint protection sys" (wax??): $300
"dealer doc fee": $50
Tax: 1392.37
Vehicle inspec fee (??): 39.50
title, license: $93.80
Inventory tax: $47.61
Driveout (total): $23917.77

The way I see it, the wax, dealer doc fee, and inventory tax are probably fluff, but I estimated the fluff to be around $300-400 over my opening offer of invoice + TTL. The dealer was able to read from my tone that I was ready to buy if the price was close and I didn't have to pull teeth. They moved fast, quickly got to a price they knew I would likely pull the trigger on, and saved me what would have been countless more hours and aggravation driving and pitting dealer v. dealer. The first dealer I offered invoice + TTL wouldn't even talk.

So, there's another data point for Texas. Probably not a record, but not too bad for a few hours work.

I'd say you got a good price, the only items I'd consider to be "fluff" are the paint protection package.

Thanks, I agree it was a good price, even with the fluff. To me, it'd be 6 of one and 1/2 a dozen of the other whether or not they wrote up the purchase order as 300 over invoice w/no fluff OR invoice plus $300 worth of dealer add-on fluff (frankly, I don't know or care whether the bottle of spray wax even made it onto the vehicle, which it may not have since it didn't spend any time on their lot).

To me, the best result is achieved for both parties by structuring a sale where the dealer can maximize its holdback/profit by selling sraight off the truck (0 days in inventory), the dealer reciprocates by minimizing markup over invoice, and both parties minimize time invested in the deal so I can get on w/my billable time and the dealer can get on to other customers and potential sales. It's a win-win approach.

I actually beat my own best price by another $300 or so. Below is my final purchase price on a 2008 CR-V EX-L 2WD in Glacier Blue. This price was from an Atlanta-area dealership.

INTERNET PRICE: $ 23,154.22 (includes Splash Guards and destination)
Dealer Fee: 599.75
Sales Tax (7%) 1,425.23
Title Fee: 21.00
TOTAL DRIVE OUT: $ 25,200.20

I haven't seen anyone on this forum beat that price on an EX-L yet!

Very nice work! And this wasn't a demo car or anything like that?

My dealer told me 25k drive-out on an EX-L was impossible; I would have dropped 25.2 if I knew such a deal were possible.

Just this afternoon completed a deal on a white EX-L AWD no NAV (4wd) for $25,500 out the door. In Missouri this does not include sales tax. It did however include doc. fee which I told them I would not pay. They just lowered the sales price to 25401, which actually saves me sales tax on the 99 bucks. The car was a dealer trade at the other dealers shipping expense. The two dealers forgot to add in the mud guards and the wheel locks, so I got those as well .
About a month ago I said that I had one for 25 even -- the sales person forgot to add in the destination charge-- Still got a good deal -- I think !!
