I recommend waiting. Why line the pockets of these dealers if you don't absolutely need a new vehicle right now. Patience. The prices will come down.

thanks much to everyone for your input--espec bravely for your detail. It appears that waiting would be the right thing to do, but what if u want the car now?!
Anyway, maybe a different forum--but is it wise to trade a subaru outback for honda cr-v, if 1 the many reasons is safety when driving in snowy/icy conditions? (the other main reason is space). thanks again to all!!

Why would a CR-V be safer than the Outback?

Not saying it is, or it isn't... just curious..

Our Subaru is a 2000 Legacy GT, 5 speed. It is my 5th Subaru. You can't beat the handling, especially in wet conditions. But it's 7 years old now and starting to show it's age. The head gaskets and catalytic converter were replaced under extended warranty. I think it's time to pull the plug. These sensor lights are troubling. We had it to the dealer, it's $1000 to fix the latest check engine warning. I've also had a Honda Civic DL that went almost 300,000 miles. I've heard similar complaints from other Subaru owners. But the main reasons we're switching to Honda is the reliability and that a good friend is a Honda mechanic, so he can pretty much solve any future issues.

not sure, ergo the question

never had a honda, first subaru (current), have always had toyota, but think i've outgrown toyota (have had celica, corolla, camry, rav4[when it first came out], 4runner, and highlander).
considering cr-v since it sits higher, appears to have more space,etc.. so just want to make sure it's as good as subaru for driving in bad weather...

If you often face heavy snow.... dirt and gravel roads, mountain driving, etc, etc.. then the AWD of the Subaru would likely be superior..

If you live in the Midwest with average snowfall and all paved roads, then you'll likely never encounter a situation that the CR-V can't handle.

That's just my experience from driving the two previous generation CR-Vs over the last 8 years. The new CR-V has a similar drivetrain, plus stability control, so it is very safe. The only issue would be in near off-road conditions.

regards,
kyfdx

thanks for the info. maybe it's optical illusion, but thought cr-v can cut through heavy snow better (ie higher car/bigger?). is it worth it to get EX-L with nav, or EX-L without, or even EX model, then get portable GPS? are dealers willing to go down on price more on LX or EX models vs. EX-L (or vice versa?), or none of the above?!!
merry xmas.

I have been in the Minneapolis market for some time. I am seeing a greater discounting in the LX area with Ex-L and EX-L w/navigation having lesser discounting. That said I believe that this is a temporary situation. If one waits until another few months, one can get much better pricing. Demand and supply are not in equilibrium right now. I don't plan on a navigation vehicle, because I have a Garmin Nuvi 360. It has blue tooth connectivity as well and more importantly I frequently connect it to my laptop for firmware updates. Garmin is great in supporting its products. I don't know if the CR-V voice directions can pronounce street names, like the nuvi.

i'm sure you're right...as is everyone who says to wait. I'd also heard that subaru might come out with a hybrid version of the tribeca, sometime in 2008; with potential much better mileage on tribeca, the market then might also be different.
hopefully, they'll also come down with price on cars with built in nav system...since portable gps system's doing well for most people. maybe a different forum..but would u say garmin is better than tomtom vs. magellan vs.etc..? thanks.

I researched the various forums before deciding on the Nuvi. Consumer reports also rated Garmin Nuvi above Tom-Tom etc. Garmin has head office in the US and Tom-Tom in Europe. I reckoned dealing with a US designed and focussed product is better. Garmin has an excellent after sales service and support. A good web site to research more is on the gpspassion forum below. I am extremely satisfied with Nuvi 360. If your budget is tight Nuvi 350 is has everything that 360 has but without the blue tooth connectivity. If I bought again, I would buy the Nuvi 350 or the new 660 which can transmit through the FM radio system.
