#2401 of 12312 Buying experience in Boston by musthaveawd

Aug 21, 2005 (12:22 pm)

I just purchased an SE in sahara sand (no add-ons) from a dealer in a suburb south of Boston. I think I got a good deal, after much haggling. Traded in a 1998 Subaru Outback with 103 k miles in fair condition and ended up paying $19K before taxes and other fees. I definitely got the car at or below invoice. The CRV is wonderful and has even converted by Subaru loving hubbie. Our buying experience however was less than stellar. The dealer should convert its tagline to Promise Everything, Deliver Nothing. In a nutshell, we experienced the following:
- After being given a loan rate quote of 5.04% from a finance manager over the phone the day before we came in to sign the papers, the closer quoted me a higher rate when we came in. He told me I should have told I him I had already spoken to the manager about the lower rate.
-The loan documents I signed were for the wrong car (incorrect VIN) and sale price so I had to come back later that day to sign new papers.
-They didn't fax paperwork to my insurance agent to get new insurance until 2 days after we drove away with the new car.
- They kept us waiting for 1.5 hours when we came in for the inspection sticker.
- They never returned calls if it didn't have anything to do with getting money from us.

I also found it ironic how they tried to scare us into buying an extended service for an outrageous amount of money when the reason we bought the Honda was for its reliability. By the way those extended plans are way overpriced - anybody out there considering getting one should bargain. We didn't get it in the end even though they shaved $500 off the price.

I am glad we buy cars only every few years because I never want to have to deal with that dealership again. I am going to get it serviced elsewhere.

#2402 of 12312 2006 CR-V Engine by thegraduate

Aug 21, 2005 (12:34 pm)

Does anyone know if the CR-V Engine will get the Horsepower boost that the Accord is getting for 2006? The SAE horsepower rating system has been rervised which lowers the listed numbers on the same output (example, the ODYSSEY for 2006 is listed at 244, as opposed to 255 for 2005), but the Accord still manages to add 6 to equal 166 horsepower even with the new rating system. Based on old regulations, it would be around 175 horsepower. Thanks for any info!

When the new Accord just came out, Temple VTEC dynoed an EX with manual. They got something close to 150 hp at the wheels. They concluded that Honda under rated the K24, which in reality gets about 180 hp.

The Accord and the Element have identical engines, CR-V has a slightly different head. And TSX has a higher compression full VTEC version of the same engine making 200 hp, according to Honda. Anyone who drives it will realize that there is more than 200 horses under that hood.

The trade-in was not a gas guzzler (it was an 03 Accord) and the dealer offered a figure a little below KBB trade-in value. The key to the deal going thru was that the price for the new CRV was not inflated to make up for a trade overallowance (if indeed there was an overallowance). If indeed they gave too much allowance, then I actually got a deal close to invoice on the CRV. I did buy on the last day of the month, so that may have affected the terms and willingness of the parties involved.

#2406 of 12312 EX in NY area by mommanan

I am pricing an EX in the NY area, preferably Sahara Sand. I got a quote of $22,000 plus freight, tax and motor vehicles fees. According to Edmunds that price is about $250 over invoice. Is that a good price in this area at this time?

By the way, this is a great board. I learned a lot about the negotiating process, not to mention I will use the HandA site for wheel locks and mats and things that I can "install" myself - I'm even considering screwing on my own front splash guards!

Honda currently has a 3% dealer hold back on the CRV. I would try to get a deal that discounts this manufacturer allowance to the dealer.

Somehow, I thought you said you traded a Ford Explorer. I don't know where I got that?

Auction results still matter however. A dealer won't want to take a skinny deal AND pay top dollar for a trade in.

I don't think you have to worry about anything. Your scores are within Honda's requirements for the advertized rates. Unfortunatley there are no special finance rates on the CR-V at this point. There was 2.9% APR for the last two weeks of March of this year.
