Thanks e2helper for suggestions. I did all and noted the dimmer and autolight switch changed nothing during the day. So the odd dimming must be something else. I've sent email to Chevy about it.
One worrying note....I've noted the maxx power steering is now getting "nervous" when the vehicle is waiting at stoplights. What happens is in some wheel positions, one can feel a faint pulsing of the steering wheel, as if the power servo is trying to find a rest position. Moving the wheel slightly usually stops this. Hopefully it is not a symptom of an earlier recall of 2004 Malibus with contaminated power steering connections !!

OK, well no more suggestions on you radio display. Probably need to compare it to another vehicle to see if normal or not.
In regards to the steering, I don't remember any of your other posts but do you know when your vehicle was built? There are 2 different "zeroing" procedures that dealers do when a steering column is replaced in a vehicle and if yours was ever changed out perhaps one of those procedures was not done.

Five months now with my MAXX LT, still running fine. Just turned 14,000 miles. Still getting great gas mileage on mostly highway driving. Between 29 & 31, although trip computer always shows 2 to 4 mpg more than actual. Seems like other MAXX owners have had the same problem.
I mentioned previously, the "t" (that was next to the "L" fell off & the dealer got one in for me. Problem is that it was one piece, "LS". So the dealer removed the remaining "t" now I only have "V6" left on the trunk. I assume the correct part will be in shortly.
My only regret was buying in early April when the rebate was only $1000 at that time & I opted for 0 financing. So I ended up after dealer discount of around $1600 paying $24,000. Seems like now I could have done much better.
Still, in all of my travels I have only seen a few MAXX's out there. I did see some 05's at the dealer today & they have the rear windshield wiper with spoiler. But, the spoiler not really necessary, at least for my driving. Every month or so I put Rain X on rear window & it probably helps but even without it no problem keeping it clean.

Stealing someone else's phrase I got over my analysis paralysis and bought a 2004 LT with the sunroof and 6 CD changer packages. With rebates and 2200 on the GM card I am out the door for 17.5 plus sales tax(on the whole damn pre rebate price in Connecticut thanks to our legislature) Acted because the selection of 2004's was getting slim. The car has an April 04 build date and I wonder if I got beyond some of the early production defects. Financed $5K to qualify for the $1K GMAC rebate. I'm impressed with the collaboration of information in this forum and look forward to sharing my own after we take delivery. I am guessing this is a car that I will either grow to like or resent.

Congratulations on your new MAXX. I hope you enjoy yours as much as we like ours. Mine has a May 04 build date, and seems to be free of some of the little rattles that some folks have noticed. Mine seems very sound and solid.

mine rolled over 9500 miles this past weekend trip to SC..and still going strong too...except for the minor accident..not near as bad as the one joe had...a side swipe by a 17 year old young lady in a ford explorer...minor damage to the rear driver door and quarter panel....other than the inconvenience....still no problems to report with my burgandy maxx..still solid...with a 02/04 build.....so some of the early build cars do well too!

#2110 of 5257 Disappointed with highway MPG
Sep 13, 2004 (6:41 pm)
I just took my first long (400 mi. each way) trip in my three week old Maxx and I'm kind of surprised with the highway mileage...only 28 one way and barely 31 the other. And this was on mostly dry, level pavement with A/C on only about half the time. I had the cruise set at 65 - 70.
OTOH, the city mileage amazes me...26 MPG in stop and go driving with a dozen or so red lights along the 8 mile commute to my place of business.
BTW, the above figures are my own actual calculations, not the trip computer's. (It usually shows about 1 - 2 MPG higher, as already mentioned in this forum).
