#226 of 245 Launch Control by tslbmw

Nov 24, 2008 (2:04 pm)

I've got 1600 miles on my car and decided to try out the launch control this past weekend....wow....impressive! What really surprised me were the rpms hitting over 7K when the redline is 6.5K. Obviously, this is ok for the engine....I guess....

Anyway, quite a fun experience. I love the way the car "squats" just before take off...like a tiger ready to pounce....good times

I'm traveling for business right now, but can't wait to get back and drive the R again. I just passed 600 miles, and I'm looking forward to trying the launch control. The manual says that recommended break in is 600 miles, so I think I'm go for launch!

Yeah, I read the same thing, but decided to wait until after 1000 miles. Then I had to take a couple of short trips last week that pushed me over 1600 and I knew it was definitely time.

It is really a cool feature; make sure you find some nice open road to try it out. Let me know how it goes.

Last week, when I started the car for the second time that day, the check engine light came on and stayed on. I took it right to the dealer. They checked a bunch of stuff, and reset the light. They said that no codes had been stored. It's been fine since, but so far I've had two "fuel cap" lights, and one "check engine" light come on for no apparent reason, with less than 1000 miles on the car. I'm not too worried...yet.

Ok, I've gotta ask the obvious question...you are "clicking" the gas cap at LEAST 3 times after each fill up, correct? I'm sure you are, but isn't that the reason that light would come on. I've got about 2500 miles on mine now and have not had any of the warnings lights (except Please Refuel!) come on. I'm sure it's nothing, but keep us posted.

I'd have to agree. Look for the simplest explanation first and that's usually the gas cap being loose. If you're sure that you're properly closin the cap, I'd check the cap itself and make sure that there's no damage that's preventing a seal.

After the fuel cap light came on for the 3rd time, I brought it in while the light was still on. They checked it again and they ordered some kind of valve. When I bring it back to get it installed, I'll report back with the details.
The first time it happened, I thought maybe I did leave the cap loose, or didn't click it, etc. The second and now 3rd time it happened, I hadn't touched the cap, hadn't filled up etc., since the last time the light came on. I was just driving along, with about a half a tank of gas or so, suddenly I hear "bing", and looked down to see the light on.
The vw mechanic explained that there are several components in the system that will result in the light coming on. I go back on the 23rd, so I'll let everyone know what happens.
BTW, he also said that after 2 or 3 "fuel cap" lights in a given time, it will trigger the "check engine" light to come on, so that part makes sense.

Ah... I just had a check engine light come on for an EGR valve malfunction. Reset the light with an OBDII scanner and waiting to see if it was a freak occurance or if it repeats itself

#234 of 245 4200 mile update by tslbmw

Feb 04, 2009 (10:00 am)

Well, it's been quiet on this forum for long enough, so here is my update. I'm about to take my 08 R32 in for its first service (oil change). I've experienced zero problems with the car so far. I've used the launch control about 8 times with no issues and lots of grins. Here are the pros and cons of the car as I see them:

Pros: Effortless speed; others may cry for more than 250 hp, but I never find myself in a situation where I've needed more power. DSG; IMO the best transmission on the planet (and this is coming from a guy who only owned manuals). Grip; the R really sticks in the turns. Haldex 4motion; it has come in handy on a few snowy days here in VA, but most importantly it eliminates all torque steer that you get in the GTI and other FWD rockets. Well appointed interior. Excellent sound system. Understated style inside and out; I love the center dual exhaust (and the sound it makes).

Cons: There is a rattle somewhere in the center stack that comes and goes. It's not very loud, but I notice it when the HVAC and radio are off. I'm going to have this addressed at the service next week. To complete the look, I wish the R came with fog lights...not a big deal, but it would be a nice touch. And my biggest complaint would have to be the small gas tank. For a little GT, this puppy is only going about 225 to 250 between fill ups. I don't mind the gas mileage, but I would love a longer cruising range.

So, there you have it. I'm about 3 1/2 months into ownership and I couldn't be happier with the car. And I have only seen one other R32 on the road since my purchase....which I love!

604doc, how did your little gas cap light situation turn out? How's your R treating you?

#235 of 245 15K update by rmorin2

My 08 had its 15K service about 3 weeks ago. I know that the manual doesn't call for anything at 15K but I had the oil changed anyway. I have had zero problems with my car other than having new wiper blades installed at the 10K service. I drive it everyday 60 miles RT to and from work at 70-75 mph. Usually get between 24 and 26 mpg so I'm not complaining. So far I am a happy R owner.
