Shipo and Altair4,
Thank you both for your time and words.
I know for sure I can Mobil 1, since I put that in my wife's Toyota Sienna. I'll check for other synthetic oil while I'm at the PX auto parts store.
They are usually good about stocking high demand items, but I've discovered I need to order the filters (oil, fuel, air) and other low demand items on my own.
Since VW Passat is such a rarity on base, the associated parts are difficult to find.
I'd be sure to check out the websites and if needed, google for me.

Keep in mind that while there are LOTS of grades of Mobil 1, only one of them meets the VW 502.00 and 503.01 oil specifications, and that oil is Mobil 1 0W-40.

Thank you. I'll look for that specific viscosity Mobil 1.

I had my car into the dealer and they could not find anything, they looked for 2 days. It has stopped for now. When I turn my car off I listen to see if I hear the noise, if I do, I disconnect the battery. I also invested in a battery jumpstart after being stranded 3 times at 9 o'clock at night after work. The only thing I found on the internet that may explain what is happening is a faulty secondary air injection pump. When i happens again, I will bring my car straight to the dealer. In the meantime, if anyone figures this out, please let us know.

I dunno know if this is meaningful to you guys or not, but I once had an '87 Golf. It had an electric radiator fan. At one point in its long life, the sensor that controlled the "after run" function of that fan went bad. The fan was supposed to run under certain high underhood temperatures to prevent vaporlock. What would happen is the fan would stop when the temperature had dropped, but sometimes would start back up again. Other times it just wouldn't stop at all, until the battery drained.
I remember that for awhile I just disconnected the sensor, so it would never run. It never vaporlocked, so I just shrugged it off. Before I ultimately got it repaired, the car was totalled when my wife got T-boned in it (solid little car - my wife came out of it okay).
Dunno if this helps or not, but your problem finally brought this back in my memory....

I found Mobil 1 0W40 at the military exchange here. It's $6.70 per quart. I've also found out what the seller was talking about. It's called Royal Purple synthetic oil. It doesn't have the specification in the back label, and costs about a dollar more per quart. Not sure if more expensive means better, but I think I'll stick with your advice.

In terms of any remainin warranty on your car (if there is one), more expensive is certainly not better. The Royal Purple is NOT certified for your car. Does that mean that it won't perform satisfactorily? No, not necessarily, however, are you willing to gamble the health of your engine trying to find out?
Regarding the price of the oils at your PX, ouch! Granted it's been thirty years since I shopped in a PX, however, I remember them always offering lower prices than what was available on the outside. Paying $6.70 for Mobil 1 0W-40 is a bit steep, here in the States I'm able to buy it in the mid to high five dollar range.

Makes you wonder what the average Korean would be paying, doesn't it?
