Engines Not Definite, Neither is Pricing... by bagekko

Theres all this talk hear about 215HP, the fact is that the exact engine specifics are not released yet, they are keeping all details about the Crossfire very quiet. It could be a 2.7L or 3.2L V-6 and either way it will be supercharged, the Edmunds 215HP might be a typo, cause speculation has it at 275HP which the original concept had and the speculation on 0-60 is 5.7 seconds. The SRT Neon can do 0-60 in 5.6 seconds, saw a post bout someone doubting it was under 6 seconds. Pricing on the Crossfire will not be final till late April / early May, they are throwin otu $39k, wether that means loaded or starting who knows, originally it was expected to start at high 20's, the thing to be considered is that if it is more expensive than the Nissan Z the car will be a disaster, despite being built in Germany and being all MB technology, it's still a Chrysler..... I already have one of the first models setup for me, but if base is over $30k and/or it does not do 0-60 in under 6 seconds I will drop my order..

There's nothing "very quiet" about what engine will be in the Crossfire. The only supercharged version will likely be an upscale model (think AMG). The following is copied directly from Chrysler's website. I don't know how much louder they can make it.

The 2004 Chrysler Crossfire is a low-slung, two seat sports coupe with a sculptured appearance. Under its hood is a 3.2-liter 90-degree V-6, 18-valve SOHC engine available with a six-speed manual or five-speed automatic transmission. The sleek design, wheelbase and center exhaust system were maintained from the original Crossfire concept, while existing powertrain and axle components were shared from Mercedes-Benz.

Pricing is definitely the major missing piece of the puzzle. If it's at or below a G35 Coupe, I'll be all over it. If the price climbs close to $40k, they can park them next to all the M-B Coupes that are piling up.

What other cars are you folks considering?

I like the Crossfire, but a sports coupe is not necessarily the way I want to go.

The C230 Kompresser has my eye, but so do the 9-3 Arc, Miata Special Edition and the Z4.

I now commute with mass transit and my wife has an Escape if I ever need to haul things. So right now, I am just looking for the car that is the most fun. But it better be fun at around 35k max, as I have other things to spend money on.

I would be happy if my loaded Crossfire w/ 6 Speed Manual was $33,000. Thats w/o a Nav System of course. Base model should be no more than $28,000 I'd say. Opinions?

The high euro is going to be a problem, but with the Crossfire using many existing components, DC could bring it in around that price.

I was in Carlsbad, California this past week and was lucky enough to have witnessed the official press release for the Crossfire, Dodge Hemi trucks and the NEON SRT-4. I basically sat in the Crossfire, a white one to be exact. Chrysler had 15 Crossfires on Display!!!! Each car had blue colored Michigan Manufacturer Plates. The car is gorgeous in person, The pics don't do the car any justice at all. The white exterior is superb. The interior of the white car was black with full leather seating. The trunk is very unique. It is very deep but not very wide. It is certainly more roomy than the 350Z(I drove a 2003 Z this week too). I asked the German gentleman showing me the car about weight, hp, etc. He only knew the weight in Kilos. When converted it is something like 3100lbs. He claimed that the crossfire doesn't have a spare tire. I think he's right b/c the trunk is so deep and the exhaust set up is centralized in the rear. The car has a nice throaty sound upon startup and soft acceleration. The entire car is built in Germany. Many parts are derived exactly from the MB 500SL. The car looks like the SL too. The car seemed to have a high build quality. The interior materials were very nice. the doors and trunk shut with confidence. The rear wing I believe is manual and automatic. I don't know what else to say but WOW!! I heard the SRT-8 is unreal-the Durango look alike

Thanks for the info, Philly. How did you swing the press release?

Did they offer any more information re. pricing? What other colors did they show? Any mention of available options?

I'm glad to hear that the trunk is deep since I was wondering if the trunk space would be too limited. Did it look like a couple of golf bags would fit?
