Got a quote for an EX-L for MSRP from Burnsville Honda via edmunds quote service. Guess I will look at Toyota Highlander.

I disagree and don't think it's a "crock" but that's O.K. I had never heard of states doing what you say. I know, in California buyers pay the FULL sales tax based on the price of the car. The trade makes no difference. Also, trades are worth what they are worth. If we don't offer enough, the shopper will either sell it themselves or look for another dealer willing to pay more for it. Nothing sinister here. |

Freddy2004. Glad to hear that your experience went well. I went to Honda of Oakland and it was a less than pleasant experience. First, the Pilot on the lot had a $4000 markup over MSRP which made me laugh out loud. The salesguy was pretty nice and not pushy at all. However, over the course of two days, I received 3 followup phone calls from a very aggressive sales manager. We really want to buy in Oakland so that the city gets the sales tax but I think we will look at the Serramonte dealer. We are also thinking about going to LA as previous posts made it seem like there were better deals and more cars there.

Just about every state has car registration information linked on the net. Sometimes you have to visit the motor vehicle page and other times the info is on a tax page. For example, here's the FAQ for New York that spells out how NY collects car sales taxes. Steve, Host |

Sorry, I don't recall the specific state (or states) that do allow sales tax credit for private non-dealer trade situations. State sales tax rules are available on the net, but are hard to find in one place. isellhondas, I you can certainly look at a dealers-only sales tax break as better than no break at all. OTOH, if the break were to be eliminated all-together tomorrow, states would presumably see their tax revenues rise so that tax rates could be lowered for everyone, or at least, a sale tax rate hike could be postponed. It is, after all, a zero-sum game when the day is done. Every tax break has to eventually be paid for by everyone. We're way off topic with respect to how much people are paying for Pilots, so I'll bow out on that. - Mark |

| Funny how the high dealer fee is almost the same as the amount they gave you above the Kelley price. The old shell game is still alive and well. Even though you got a fairly decent price, when it comes to trade-ins there are no free lunches. In the end, they always get it back somewhere. No matter how much folksy family crap they throw at you its still strictly business. | |
