| Anyone have any buying experience for Pilot in the New Orleans area? Looking to buy one the next few months. | |

Just bought a Pilot EX last month. Before buying it, I called up many local dealers and many were saying that they could give me a good price but I wouldn't be able to see the car in five or six months -- many were out of stock. The car is so hot that many dealers are not willing to negotiate. Then a friend of mine recommended the sales manager in Serremonte Honda. After a few phone calls back and forth, we settled a price about $1500 over invoice but I was not sure about the color. Then, on the day I went to check the car out, I found a better color (Sandstone) that I liked better. So I asked if he had one. Yes, he said. He then showed me a brand new one just off the truck, only 4 miles in it, with plastic protective covers still on here and there. After we sat down that figured out the final price, I asked for $1000 over invoice. He said no. We finally agreed upon $1300 over Edmund invoice including destination charge. He would also throw in a set of wheel locks and protective door strips free of charge. The financial person mentioned extended warranty to me but I trusted Honda's reputation. He didn't explain anything more and didn't try to sell anything else to me. I wrote him a check and told him to charge $2500 on my discover card. This buying experience was almost as pleasant as my last buying experience when I bought my BMW 325i -- no haggle -- settled a price over the internet then get a little bit better depending on the car you would like to get on site. I didn't trade in my old car. I got the Edmund dealer suggested price (the highest one) on my car through a private party deal. It was easy and pleasant on the net since I didn't have to post anything and showed many people on my old car. |

freddy, sounds like exactly the right approach to getting the best deal on both the new car and getting rid of the old one. I just wish the state I lived (WA) wouldn't screw you on the sales tax. Only dealers are allowed to charge tax on the delta, so if you sell privately, you effectively end up paying sales tax on whatever your old car is worth. - Mark |

Finally got our Pilot EX-L from Open Road Honda, Edison, NJ. Just base model. Nothing else added. Got it for $29460 including destination. Fees and taxes extra. I think this is good deal... Did a lot of shopping around... I got the car after a week of getting the VIN number. When I took the vehicle from the dealer, he also gave me wheel locks and a plastic floor mat in the cargo area "free". I am not sure if this floor mat comes with the vehicle. Forgot to mention - got two key chains too I used internet dept to get the quotes and emails to bargain... Sam. |

I'm in WA and I don't understand why you think you are getting "screwed" on the sales tax? As you pointed out, you only pay tax on the difference. In a lot of other states, you will pay tax on the entire price of the new car! We are actually lucky we have this considering how we get taxed to death on everything else! Oh yeah...I have to keep reminding myself...we have no state income tax! |

In WA state, if you trade your car in with a dealer, you pay sales tax on the delta between the new car price and your trade value. If you instead sell your car privately, you pay sales tax on the entire price of the new car. The net effect is that selling privately rather than trading with the dealery carries a tax penalty of about 9% of the value of the trade. Several states have tested this type of law in courts and found it illegal to reserve this tax break to dealers only. In these states, you can file paperwork to show you sold a car within 90-days of buying a new car and get a tax credit for the value of the car you sold. If you are negotiating a deal and mention you are considering selling privately, dealers will typically mention this tax consequence. This break allows them to reduce their trade-in offer because they know you will have to pay extra tax if you sell privately. It also discourages shopping at non-local dealerships because of the difficulty, time, and expense of driving your trade-in to distant dealerships for a deal that may or may not be consumated. This special break to dealers is maintained in the WA legislature at considerable expense by the dealer lobby and with generous contributions to legislators' campaign funds. In short, it's a crock. - Mark
