They would not give you the trade-in value alone because their concern is to sell a car. Eventually, they will give you a ridiculous number on your car and then say, let's forget about your car.. you buy a car first with whatever you have and then you sell the car yourself to make additional down payment to reduce your monthly payment. A typical senario..
 
In fact, you should not have mentioned a trade-in. You reach a deal on the price of the new car and then talk about trade-in and financing.

I really despise this practice. Even if I don't mention the trade-in, it's usually pretty obvious when my wife and I roll into the dealership with our 3.5 year old SUV, looking at new SUV's.
 
I guess when I call him back, I'll say let's figure out the price on the Pilot first, and then dicuss the trade-in? Is it too late for that, the cat's already out of the bag? Maybe I need to start from scratch with another salesperson? They probably won't do that. Ah, frustrating.
 
One time, I even had a salesman tell me that they could offer another $1000 off on a vehicle if I didn't have a trade-in. If I was trading in my vehicle, then I couldn't get that $1000. He even admitted it was a marketing ploy.

I just received a quote on a 2009 Pilot EX-L with RES at $33,509 not including destination fees. How does this quote sound? It's the first quote and I'm going to negotiate more. I curious to know what prices others are seeing.

2009 Touring 4wd by jwalls

After a ton of haggling, the best I can do on a 2009 Touring 4wd with nav but no RES, with the lighted running boards is $35,900.00 (plus tax, lic...).
 
Any thoughts out there ?

No, i bought it a few days before the $2000 incentive.Some folks from this forum paid 34032 or thereabout. I however got the 1.9 or 3.9 APR that was just introduced then. I travelled (over 600miles) with mine last weekend and it was a delight in every aspectincluding the navigation system.

about a month ago, we purchased 2009 EX-L with RES AWD for $33K including destination charge. This was in Palo Alto, Ca. I put $20K down and financed the remainder at 0% financing for 4 years.

Did that price also include taxes and title? I just received a quote for $34500 including taxes, title, processing fee, and destination charge...out the door at this price. I'm in Harrisonburg, VA.

595 + 299 dealer doc/admin fee = 898 charge not included in the car price

A charge included in most lease transactions that is either paid up front or is included in the gross capitalized cost.
 
It may be called a bank fee, an administrative fee, or an assignment fee. This fee usually covers a variety of administrative costs, such as the costs of obtaining a credit report, verifying insurance coverage, checking the accuracy and completeness of the lease documentation, and entering the lease in data processing and accounting systems.

In regard to the guy who can't get a quote without an appraisal, just tell them you changed your mind on the trade in and are either keeping it as a beater or selling it third party. You can always go back the other way afterwards. The only downside to this is that it leaves you open to a low-ball trade in amount.
 
Bottom line is that a dealer needs to make money somewhere. If you want below-invoice pricing, you're not likely to get above-blue book trade in amount.
