I do believe there will be more incentives coming down the pipe. The overall sales nor the reviews of the pilots are very bright. Here is the disclosed news avout sales:

Keep in mind that declining sales figures will only result in increased incentives if they are unexpected and therefore there is overproduction, or if production levels are fixed. Most of Honda's plants aren't strapped with the same fixed cost ratios of the Big 3, and therefore they can and have scaled back production to meet demand. If supply and demand remain in alignment, pricing does not change. Basic economics folks!!!

Thanks! This was VERY informative.
Now there's something that I still can't get my head around... Why did Honda offer cash incentives on the '09 Pilots right out of the gate??

Not quite that simple. Honda might decrease production but there are a lot of competitors in the current market, and I can honestly say that looks wise some are much more attractive that the new HONDA Pilot. My bet, We will see more incentives as they sell off all the 2008 models. Hang in there.

Let me get this straight.....the existence of competition results in a need for incentives? Just not true. And the 2008 inventory levels are already near zero (from a statistically significant perspective).
Manufacturers provide incentives either as part of a marketing budget or to balance supply and demand to meet fixed-volume manufacturing requirements. This isn't my opinion, it is fact.
The likely reason that early incentives were offered is to get a quantity of vehicles on the road for "drive-by" marketing purposes. Commercials and print ads only do so much to get people interested in a vehicle, sometimes it takes sitting next to one at a red light for 30 seconds to really catch your eye.

Allow me to respectfully disagree with you : ) . The only reason they have incentives is because they have not sold the inventory as planned. Just a few years back Honda used to no deal with you because they knew that behind you there was another willing buyer to pay full price. This is not the case in the current market. The only way they are able to clear inventory is through incentives (either financing and or rebates). The competition has stiffened and now Honda is willing to negotiate with their prices. I bet money the rebates in the 2009 will come back either late this year or by spring of 2009. It will be a fact.

You are both Correct. Supply and demand does play a part as does inventory.
Each manufacturer has they own formula. But, bear in mind, current market conditions are not like anyone has ever experienced. Most vehicles are sold with credit, and right now credit is at a standstill. What we do not know is how long Honda dealers can keep current prices without incentives in this uncertain market.
