What is a senior chief mechanic? Running your engine on two quarts of oil every oil change does more damage to your engine than any benefit. The most damage on an engine is when you initially start the car, before the oil has reached the moving parts and created a barrier between them. The worst time is when you change the oil, since there is no oil in the filter and other critical oil paths. Those few seconds create 1000s of miles of wear.

Most oil related failures are due to the lack of oil, not the type or age of the oil. If you are changing the oil at 2,500 miles, there will be no sludge. Too many TV commercials about "performance-robbing" sludge.

New oil also has chemicals in it that can damage the catalytic converter. Normal oil change cylcles don't introduce these chemicals often enough to cause an issue, but excessively frequent changes will.

Interesting - that was news to me. Who's going to break the news to all the quick lube joints?

Thanks! We looked into the Maintenance Manual and figured the codes out but it also said that B is usually under "extreme" driving conditions so everything that will be done in A is also in B but with lesser milage. That's what I meant when I said Schedule A and/or B.

We didn't find the VTM-4 fluid change at 10K and 15K thereafter but will look again and I do appreciate the information. Is just weird to us that it doesn't follow a 15K one like we are used to on our previous cars. I mean, it will be at 10, 25, 40, etc, instead of the way easier to remember 15, 30, 45, etc. So for oil, tires rotation, belts, etc, it is 7.5, 15, 22.5, 30, etc but we have to go in between those for the VTM-4 fluid. Weird!!

The oil change reminder is coming on at about every 6500 miles or so which I think is normal for the use we give the car and what the manual says. I do agree that in new cars, every 3K is an overkill.

Thanks a lot!

Yeah, it is a strange way to layout a service schedule. I never could get a good answer on why they did it this way. Just follow the minder and take care of all the things during the normal A or B schedule. A few extra miles on the VTM fluid won't damage anything.

Motor oil myths and facts-don't fall for 3000mi. myth or dark oil myth-follow recommended severe oil change-synthetic oil if you have a high performance engine or extremly cold climate other wise it provides no benefit(but no harm either)-avoid engine flushes-check oil-synthetic oil still becomes contaminated ! You can use any oil that meets spc.,even the cheap oil !

Thanks Steve for the referral article. Good info on car care and tips on what NOT to get suckered into with car service.

Good luck to all and stay safe.
