The Mazda MX-3 seemed to be cut from the same cloth as the NX, equally short-lived.

Was in San Juan, PR on vacation in 1993... The Mazda MX-3s were everywhere!!
One thing that set them apart... the availability of a V-6.. There is one that lives about two blocks from me...

Those sold in large numbers in Canada back in the day, too. I remember in the mid 90s you couldn't throw a stone without hitting one (or a MB W140) in Vancouver. In Canada they were called something like the "Precidia MX3" -kind of a JDM name.

I think it was a 1.8 liter V6 too so a real odd ball.

Yeah.... I wanted to say it was 1.8 litre... but, that seemed just too weird..
I think you are right, though...

Yep, 1.8, same engine family as the 2.5L V6 in the MX-6/Probe. Not the smallest mass-market V6 but close.

Is that the same engine as the 2.5 V-6 that was used in the Contour and Mystique, or were those different?

That sounds like about the right interval for those cars. Years ago, one of my friends bought a brand-new Dynasty, with the 3.3 V-6 and 4-speed "Ultradrive" automatic. I forget when the first one went out, but I think #2 failed around the 90K mark. Chrysler picked up the first one under warranty, and miraculously, he got them to cover half the cost of rebuild #2.
Just outta curiosity, how much is a rebuild in one of those nowadays?

Nope. The Duratec V6 in the Countour, etc. was something Ford's European arm whipped up in the early '90s, although Mazda does use later versions in the Mazda6.
