Hey, I am an American citizen. I have every right to be here. It's people like you that give America a bad reputation internationally. Xenophobia now!

I agree. The 3800 is a decent engine but nothing to write home about. When at"bear" says that they need to be revved at high rpms to receive the powe, he must be some old grandpa that doesn't drive his car past 2,000 rpms. It's not like the peak torque is at 8,000 rpms... If you drive a car fast, it revs higher... it goes hand in hand.

Revving a car faster and speed increases do go hand in hand in spurts. As you go faster, your tranny shifts, and RPM's decrease to maintain the same speed. I guess the point is, the 3800 is the workhorse that you can work hard every day and still rely on to keep pulling for you smoothly and consistantly, without having to shove a coal up it's (edited) to get it to run. It's powerband gives you more punch from the get go without having to floor it all the time.
I am feeling old and tired again, crawling back into my rocking chair.

The supercharged 3800 WILL be available in the Impala, as the Impala SS, this summer. It will NOT be the Series III, but rather the Series II. It will have the 240 hp. By well before 2007, the current Impala will be history. It currently looks that the new version will be RWD.

And one can disagree without being disagreeable. I HAVE test driven both a Maxima and an Accord. Unfortunately for GM, and for you, I found the Mazda6 to be superior to either of them.

I suppose you don't fly Boeing aircraft, either. Before you trash GM engines consider the Corvette which uses a supposedly "old technology" pushrod engine.

so this version of the Impala came out as a 2000, right? And it fianlly gets something resembling an above average performer as a 2004?

That's what's called 'bringing the product to market quickly'.

A GM trademark.

It is also called you being wrong when you said it might happen by 2007. This version of the Impala will be gone within three years, max.

Designing and building cars takes time. Mr. Lutz is changing GM in about every way you can imagine, as is Mr. Wagoner, the chairman. It is far, far harder to actually DO than to sit in a computer chair and shoot off one's mouth at the keyboard. GM has made an amazing turnaround. It isn't over yet. Most of the results won't be seen for at least another two years.

That all being said, I understand your frustration. I, myself, may very well buy a Mazda right now. I will be back to GM, but maybe not right now. It all depends on the performance and my quality perception of the Grand Prix GTP arriving at dealers late next month.

c'mon it shouldn't take 4 model years to put a supercharger in a car.

Also, GM had a perfectly good Shortstar motor they could have put in the monte.

Damn, most carmakers including Chysler can develop a completely new car in 2-3 years now but that's how long it takes GM to put a supercharger in the Impala and monte and we're suppose to forgive their sad buts for being so dang slow with it?

"Most of the results won't be seen for at least another two years."

That statement summarizes GM's hype for the last 10 or more years....."it will be coming in the future".

johncline, 3 years max is 2006. Not that far off from 2007.

magnet, you didn't read the post did you? He said a supercharger by 2007... there will be a whole different model Impala by 2007. One with RWD and V8 (import killer). Instead of HP we should be looking at Torque numbers... What's the torque for the Maxima? About 245 or so? wow, that's about 40 less than the 1997 Grand Prix! The Grand Prix now has 260 HP and more torque. The Honda DOES have to be revved to get to 240-- and it only has 212 TQ! That's less than the base GM W-Body! The Accord starts with 160HP! I thought it was fitting that when I went to the Honda.com they didn't even have a performance tab for the Accord... all I could do was laugh and think to myself "I'm not surprised."
