Hi. Just wondering what you have decided to do? I am in the same boat. I have a 98 V6 coupe and it has 143k miles on it. My transmission went out on me. So, I am debating whether to fix it or not.

2008 Honda Accord Coupe Visibility by licouper

I just got the '08 Accord Coupe EX and the ONLY issue I have with it is the major blind spots to the rear (both sides). I hate changing lanes & backing up. Am I the only one with this issue?

I went from the 03 coupe to the 08 coupe, and I agree with you that the new model has a little less visibility to the rear. Overall the car has a larger, higher, and more substantial rear end design so that you have to really use your 3 mirrors and look back over your shoulder to check for clearance. I personally have not had any problems changing lanes since if you have your rear and side mirrors set properly, you should be able to see cars in adjacent lanes in your mirrors. In other words, as cars approach and pass you from your rear, you should be able to first see them in the rearview mirror, and then your field of vision should shift automatically to the side mirrors as the car(s) pass you on the sides. But I still check over my shoulder frequently when I change lanes.

I'm relatively tall, so I'm also able to see back through the rear window as I look over my shoulder. If you're shorter, you may need to raise your seat so that you have a more direct angle to the rear as you look back?

But I do agree with you that the rear visibility is slightly more compromised in the new coupe. Not enough to freak me out, but I do pay more attention. I noticed that you can order rear parking assist sensors on the new Accord. I'm not sure if I'd go that far, but I can see why some would like the sensors to beep if you get too close to something.

One other slight beef that I have is that the shifter (I have the 6speed) is more notchy than on my 03. My previous coupe had a quicker, almost joy-stick like shifter, while the new coupe requires you to be more deliberate as you shift. This is most pronounced from 2nd to 3rd. I used to be able to just "flick" it with a quick wrist, and now I have to more forcefully engage the gear. But I'm hoping the transmission will shift more smoothly as I gradually break the car in.

Overall, this is one fun and fast car!

Thanks for the tip! I am only 5'6'' & I did raise the seat as high as it goes (which helped about 50%) but I still have issues with the side back windows & partition dividing the door/ back body of the car. (Maybe I need a seat cushion too- haha!) When I turn my head to double-check before changing lanes, my view is of the body of the car. I'm thinking of getting the after-market back up cameras. Since the EX doesn't have navigation, I cannot get it from the dealer. It seems ridiculous to have to do this, but I am afraid of hitting someone or something while parking in tight spots, changing lanes, etc. Also because of the styling on the lower rear (although it looks cool), makes it harder to judge in parking in tight spots. I am very surprised that I haven't seen too many complaints about visibility.

You may need a seat cushion to raise your torso up a bit more, especially if your head is still not that close to the headliner. The rear window is also more raked than it was on the previous coupe, so it's important to get your eye level up to the point you can see straight out and above the panel below the rear window.

This car definitely has a lot of sheet metal (front and rear) and the windows are smaller relative to the body, so visibility is definitely not as good. You almost sit inside the coupe like you're in a coccoon. I'm sure that is one reason it is much safer in the event of a collision, but I know what you mean about seeing to the front as well.

Good luck!

Hey, another thought is that you can get an additional (usually round) mirror that you an stick on your side mirrors that provides a wider field of vision and reduce blind spots to the side. I've never used them myself, but I've seen other cars with them.

I also have the backup sensors on the back of my minivan and it is definitely helpful since it identifies any objects that are directly behind or to the side of my van (toward the rear). It gives a whole level of security when backing up. The backup camera is definitely another option, but without the NAVI screen, it may be expensive to install on an aftermarket basis? The sensors are a few hundred dollars, and install right into the rear bumper.

Again, good luck....

my daughter is 5'4" and she test drove all the honda's (civic coupe, accord coupe and CR-V). she ended up wanting the accord coupe (for her birthday), but needed the EX-L with the power seat, since she's so short. ended up with the 08 coupe, EX-L, 5AT/automatic, I4/4 cylinder, with navigation (i wanted her to have the bluetooth, as she's on the phone constantly and i can sleep better knowing if she's on the phone driving, she's using the bluetooth rather than holding a phone to her ear - she's only 18!). got a great deal out the door, $27685 OTD. we're picking it up in northern virginia this weekend.

What does being short have to do with needing a power seat? Does she share the car with a tall person?

I FINALLY love my 05 EXL-V6 by gouldn

In 2005 I bought a 2005 Coupe EX-L V6, and never really clicked with the car. I ended up driving my old Subaru to work, and the poor car languished in the garage undriven. This spring I decided I should sell it and get something I like instead of just having it sit all forlorn in the garage. I cleaned it up, drove it to a Lexus Dealer, and test drove some CPO 05 GS430s and GS300s. I was all ready to pull the trigger, but was shocked at the 13K trade offer on my mint 05. Mind you, this car as 15K on it, garaged, mint condition, and has the leather, V6 and Navi. I drove it home, and I realized why I don't like it ... the stereo just plain sucks (especially after comparing it to the GS stereos). I took it into my local shop, and they set me up with new speakers, and a separate amp. Now it finally has the audio to match the luxury of it's seats, quietness, etc.

I wish Honda would upgrade the stock speakers a bit, the 6x9's they took out in the rear were REAL cheap looking, and the Alpines I replaced it with sound SOOO much better. For those of you who bought the 08, have they improved the sound?

Anyways, I now look forward to commuting in the car.

Yes, the stereo in the 2008 EX-L Accord is a significant improvement. 270 watts, 6 speakers, plus a subwoofer. I would not categorize it as audiophile quality, but it is a capable, more than adequate system. I had a 2003 6spd coupe with the "hi end" stereo (similar or same as your 2005), and I agree that the speakers were pretty average. One of the first things I did with my previous Accord was to install aftermarket speakers. The sound system in the 2008 is fine and I don't plan to change a thing with it.
