Good day all,

Last week the dealership replaced Pistons 2&4 on my 2004 Impreza 2.5RS due my complaints of engine knocking (piston slapping?). I suspect they have been faulty for sometime but I decided that something was definitely not normal because the performance began to suffer as well.

What confuses me most is the dealership has no real explanation of why a car with 60K on needs to have pistons replaced - like its normal and to be expected. I was lead to believe that the replacement pistons are identical to the defective ones, not sub parts so what’s preventing them from failing again?
The part numbers for the replacement pistons are:
12006AC910 and 12006AC920 -“PISTON SET OS0.06 A and B”

So I called Subaru Canada Customer Service if I could get a better explanation but they were of no help either. I think I will try them again and be more assertive this time.

The information that I have read in this forum has been quite helpful. Thank you all.

So everything is fine NOW - the performance is better, but for how long?

The good news is that I purchased an extended warranty (5yrs\160k) when I purchased the car.

Thanks for listening.

Barry

Let the Warranty dept worry about it, the whole reason to get it is so that you don't have to.

Subaru replaced piston 2&4 in my 2004 impreza outback sport at 29,000 miles. 1200 miles later the piston slap was back. At 32,000 miles subaru replaced the the block. There are now 1500 miles on the new motor. We'll see. I also put an extended warrenty on the car, up to 80,000 miles. Good Luck. Fran

Ours is an '04 Forester 2.5X 5-Speed with 39,000 Miles. My wife reports that the "hill holder" clutch now seems to be engaging itself on level ground at stop lights. It began doing this several weeks ago. I've read on here that it can be adjusted, which is good. BUT, I'd like to save money where I can. Is it possible to explain how the adjustment is made without use of photos on this forum?

Thanks for any advice.

if you do a search on the "old" Forester forum, IIRC there are some drawings of how it works.

But, I thought that the vehicle had to actually be on an "angle" for the hill holder check valve to even fall in place. And, in my experience, it gets less active with time. Let us know how it goes...my hill holder is "invisible" except on a slope.

Thanks John. I'll look around. What's "IIRC" ? Our hill holder has always been a bit grabby. I wish ours would weaken. I seem to remember that there's some sort of a steel ball that rolls in a tube, acting as a valve for the brakes.

yes, there is a steel ball that rolls back to block return flow. It only works at certain angles...

IIRC, it means "if I remember correctly".

There might be a hillholder tech memo on the SOA web site also. IIRC there was a "Drive" magazine article on it too.

I am positive that it did NOT fall off. It is securely fastened.

Regarding the last of evidence of damage on your trunk, that simply means that the thief knew what they were doing. They were probably interested in leaving the spoiler undamaged and your trunk being undamaged is merely a side effect of that caution.

Even though Barney Fife had never heard of a spoiler being stolen, it is pretty common occurence well documented on other Subaru forums. Get the police report changed (or created) and claim it on your comprehensive insurance. Fill the holes and repaint the trunk or replace it.

If they were going to steal the spoiler, why would they not also take the cord that was left dangling?

I suppose the beeping and a couple other factors could just be coincidences but its so hard to tell with everyone giving different opinions.
