2003 Turbo, mileage, steering rack etc by sheboygan
Jul 28, 2004 (6:07 am)
Well I've had the used 2003 PT cruiser for 4 months and put 10,000 miles on it. Definitely miss the 5 spd '99 Cougar, but domestic tranquility has settled in (and I don't have to drive all the time). Funny side note on this vehicle: bought it used from a Chrysler dealer in March, changed the oil in May, found a mouse nest (and former inhabitant) in the air filter. So much for 5 point inspection. I have a couple things that need shop time, but I'd like to see what other folks have run in to. First and biggest concern: the entire light system will pulse when the brakes are pressed or cruise is disengaged - no rhyme or reason, just comes and goes. Mileage for 50/50 driving is worse than the V6 Cougar and averages 22-23 mpg. Any chance a dealer can do anything to tweak that? Also the steering wheel shakes like crazy when it feels like it. Trying to decide whether it's a cupped tire (Cougar was good for that too) or the rack. Neon's of this vintage had a lot of rack problems. Anyway it's fun to wind it up and clobber a low rider in a souped-up Honda that can't get out of 2nd fast enough. Oh and it's great in big city traffic too. Could do better in the curves, but I'm pretty sure that's the tires.

Your mpg is very good for a GT. My 03 GT automatic averages 18 mpg (I keep a log) and gets 22-23 on freeway driving. The best mpg I've seen is 25 on one freeway only drive at moderate speeds. The car is driven easy.

The car will handle MUCH better and be more stable if you add the formerly standard rear sway bar. It is a 30 minute job and the mounting holes are already there. We noticed the difference immediately. Gives the car a tied to the road feel.

I've seen many GTs with cupped tires I don't know if it is the Goodyear RSAs that came with the GTs or something with the car itself. I don't see cupping on GTs that have changed wheels and tires. The tires on mine are cupped, but except for the tires becoming noisy there is no vibration or steering wheel shimmy.

I have been told some very early 03 GTs had steering rack problems. The symptom is a noise that sounds like it is coming from just below the steering wheel when the steering wheel is turned. Usually can only be heard at low speed. Steering feels normal and there is no shimmy.

A/C still working by charlesf1

Well it has been a month since I got my Cruiser back from the shop and the A/C is still working in this 95 deg. So. CA weather. Still no word on the changes on the 2005 Cruisers or when they will be showing up at the dealers.

Transmission Woes by xmtr
Aug 23, 2004 (6:06 pm)
Has anyone had any problems with the automatic transmission in their car. My 2003 GT just blew the trans. 22K miles. I was just driving along and something let loose inside & poked right through the case. I am still waiting for the dealer to get my new part. No coverage for rental or loaner cars either!

Have 03 GT automatic and have not had nor have I heard of tranny problems. Local dealer (SoCal) gives free loaners when car out of service for warranty repairs.

Pulsating Dashboard Lights by xmtr
Sep 30, 2004 (6:39 pm)
Does anyone have any problems with their lights pulsating all the time? They go dim, then bright. Had it to the dealer, they first told me it was "normal". Then they changed the battery and it was OK for 6 months, now it seems to be back.

New PT Owner Has Questions by mykie
Jan 29, 2005 (6:22 pm)
2004 Limited automatic. Love this car! Does anyone miss not having ABS brakes? I miss the headlights not staying on after ignition is off. I heard 06 will have a V6. Thank you.

Does the 05 GT really need premium gas? by alrfree
Mar 22, 2005 (12:56 pm)
I just bought the 05 GT (220 hp, turbo) with a stick shift. I live in So. California. There's a sticker on the gas cap stating "premium grade recommended." Does it really make a difference what grade gas I use or (my cynical side asks)did the oil companies give Chrystler $$$$ to put that sticker on the car? Is there any downside to using regular or middle grade gas?

Your GT will accelerate faster and get a little better mpg using premium. Generally, an owner's manual will say that regular can be used, but performance will be reduced.

All three of my cars (including an 03 GT) felt okay using regular and ran fine too. However, mpg dropped by about 8% and, using a stop watch, lower performance was measured too (3 to 4 tenths 0-60 and slower passing times too). At today's prices, my tests show there is virtually no dollar savings using regular instead of premium.

Normally, as long as the engine electronics are able to adjust to keep the engine from knocking your engine will not be damaged using regular. Because the car will feel about the same you probably will not notice the lower performance.
