Best deal on Tech + Ent package by papaharris

Hi everyone. I'm new to this thread, but so far, I have found the information phenomenal. Thanks to everyone! I think I'm going to make the Acura MDX my first car purchase.

From what I can gather, the national base invoice price for the tech + ent package is $41683 (w/o destination charge).

And currently there is $2000 dealer incintive making the true invoice price $39683.

I have a few questions, is the dealer actually charged $715 (destination charge)?

Should I try to negotiate on document fees and other dealer fees or should I even have to pay any of this administrative stuff?

What should be a good price OTD?

I am in Greenville, SC, but I think to get the best deal, I'm going to need to go Atlanta.

I'm thinking:

$39683 + $715 (destination fee) + $400 TTL = $40,800 OTD should be what I'm shooting for.

Any comments or suggestions?

Destination is a real charge and the dealer does pay it, so if a dealer "waives" the destination fee then it is coming out of something else.

Doc fees, etc, are a classic way for a dealer to make up some profit lost during negotiations. Give the customer invoice but then hit them up with a $400-$500 documentation fee. The actual cost for the dealer to do documentation varies by state, but is often under $50. Obviously if there are tax/title/license/registration fees paid at time of sale the dealer is paying those.

The $2,000 incentive paid to the dealer can't be applied for a lease, so be aware of that. It looks like it's being used to liquidate the 2008 inventory in anticipation of the 2009 which should be out in another month or two.

If you can get the dealer to knock $2000 off in lieu of the 2.9% then that is the way to go as I don't believe the difference in interest will be $2,000 even if you financed the car with little or no money down.

This isn't necessariy true. It depends on what interest rate you can get. I took the 2.9 and came out on top. Google Car loan calculator and do the numbers. An average car loan now is about 6%. Even with 4.9% interest, financing 38k came out to the same as financing 40K with 2.9%. That is if you can GET 4.9%.

I just inked a deal on an MDX Tech/PTG and was given the choice of 2.9 without the 2k dealer cash, or 4.94% from honda motor credit with the 2k dealer cash. The payment (with no money down other than upfront fees and taxes) was nearly identical. I chose the 4.94 (which ended up being 4.85 after they ran my credit- I'm also an existing acura lease customer, so i believe they offered me a .10% discount as a result), because I thought that owing less on the vehicle overall would be better in the long run. The 4.94 is the promotional rate that acura was offering prior to the 2.9 they are currently offering and they are still willing to offer it; they just don't advertise it.

The 2.9% or $2,000 off wasn't available when I leased our car a few weeks ago (if it had been available I might have made a purchase but am still nervous about resale value on these cars with $5 premium fuel just around the corner).

In any event when I ran the numbers, it worked out cheaper to take $2,000 in cash and do 4.9% financing than to do 2.9% financing with the same money down.
