May Sales in Louisville, Ky by annlee

Car Sales in Louisville drop in May because of the Derby. It appeared to me and a friend of mine at work (who is shopping for an Acura TL) that they need to make some sales this month. Just a little note to those who might be willing to travel to Louisville.

No trade in for us as we sold our car at Carmax. We also financed through our own bank and not theirs.

I prefer not to mention the dealership by name. However, reading my advice it should be pretty easy to figure out where I bought it.

Wow...that sounds like a great deal overall. My wife and I are looking at getting an '07 and just got back from the dealer with their final offer...which we are very much considering. What does everyone think on the following numbers?

Model: Tech/Ent Packages
Color: Nimbus w/Taupe
Accessories Intalled: Roof Rails, Cross Bars, Running Boards, Side Body Molding, Cargo Tray, All Season Mats, and Wheel Locks

Cost:
$41425 Invoice + $670 Destination
$153.81 Dealer Profit (Don't ask me how we came to this number!)
$2000 For Accessories (15.6% off accessories)
Total Cost = $44248.81

After Tax, Title, Tags, Processing Fee, OTD cost is exactly $46K. What do you think? Thanks.

Is there anyplace that one can go to to get information on Holdbacks and how much the holdbacks (%) are at a given time?

Based on the Mid-Atlantic region that seems high.

There is a spread sheet that I use that better breaks down dealer pricing. I find it very helpful in my negotiations in the past. With the deal they offered you the factory holdback on that MDX paid to the dealer after the vehicle sells is roughly $927 and the dealer profit at the price you have quoted is roughly $1093 or 2.7%. The dealer is also making a good amount of money on the accessories.

In my opinion, They should be able to come down at least $600 more. That would give them $500 profit plus whatever they make on the accessories which I am guessing is another $600-$800.

With $4 a gallon gas looming, slow summer months ahead and the release of 08's they want to sell the vehicle at that price.

Malyel,

Can you direct me to the spreadsheet that you used. How did you determine the holdback of 2.7%

Thanks

Switchrox,

Can you tell me which dealer you have your offer from? I am looking for 2007 MDX Sport with Roof rack and sport running boards. I am in the Phila Suburbs area.

thanks

I don't think I can provide links here but if you Google "car buying spreadsheet" it was the first result. It's a great site and you want to use the Buyer's Offer Spreadsheet. I have been told Acura as a line, has a 2% holdback.

The 2.7% was not the holdback but the profit on the deal in addition to the holdback.

The only thing I would add about the spread sheet is it recommends a 3%-5% profit. I think that's way too high if you are buying a good amount of accessories. 3% is fair if the vehicle is stock with no add ons.

With my MDX the profit on the car was 1.12% but the dealership made money on the accessories. The more accessories you buy the lower the price the car should be.

It's funny you mentioned the spreadsheet because I used the same one. I went into the dealership armed with a $45673 OTD offer, and after negotiating back and forth, they offered $46000 (see breakout above). The spreadsheet becomes extremely powerful when a car has been out a while and holdback can be put into the negotiations. I agree that with the summer months, gas rising, etc, they will want to sell this car. As that spreadsheet indicates, 3-5% is reasonable profit over dealer cost. I think the 46K comes in just over 5%, so all in all, I'm pretty happy. I will probably come back with my own final offer a few hundred less and see what happens. Cheers!

I don't think your deal is bad. I would just approach negotiating as the dealer needs to sell the MDX for as close to the "real" cost in order for you to buy the accessories where the real profit it. Don't forget to point out the dealership's service department is also making money on the installation of those accessories. I also would threaten to wait till the last day of the month and go into whoever is the main rival with the $45.6k deal. The salesman who helped me let it slip that the dealership had several salesman quit because of the lack of business. So that proves it's a slow month and if a dealer has a poor turnout this Memorial day weekend they would probably be willing to push a car out on the last day of the month. I doubt they would let you walk over $325. You might also look on the dealership lot and see if there are any colors or trim packages that have been there longer. In the Mid-Atlantic states the dealer must have state inspection when the cars get on the lots. After 3 months a vehicle on the lot is costing them money. I also don't recommend negotiating with your salesman. You want to talk to the sales manager. The salesman is there to show you the car and go on the test drive. He works for you, if you don't buy he doesn't get paid. The last thing to be careful of is the warranty. The dealership where I bought mine wanted the 8yr/120k no deductible warranty for over a thousand dollars more than it can be had online. Good luck!
