My lease offer by shylard

Hi all, I just sent over the following offer and it was accepted over the phone. Should I ask for this in writing?

2008 G37 Journey coupe, auto, premium pkg, navigation in Blue Slate/Stone
24 mos/12k miles
MSRP: $45,197.18
Residual 71%: $32,090
MF: 1.94
Doc Fee: $595
$0 down
CT Taxes 6%: ~$678 (to be added to monthly payment)

Another thing, dealer said they don't offer a 24mos/10k lease, but doesn't IFS increase the residual percentage by 1% for lowering your mileage? i.e. 12k would be 71%, 10k would be 72%

I've got an appointment set up for Saturday, so I should be turning my 2005 Pathfinder lease in and driving out with the G37!

I'd love to know your thoughts and any answers to my questions!

Thanks!!

IFS no longer does the 24 month/10k mile per year lease - so you have to take the 12k miles per year. Since you are ALLOWED 12k per year your residual would reflect that number and not the higher 10k number. If you don't drive them, then IFS gets back a really low mile car.

Did I miss something or did you post what you are paying for the car (which is the most important part) ? You also should get a 36/30k lease quote and see how that compares to 24/24k.

Sorry, forgot to post that.

Gross Cap Cost: $38,424

Second question, I have 5 payments left on my lease. Haven't addressed that yet with the dealer because I wanted to get the best price on the car before they started factoring that in.

Is it possible for them to write a check for at least 2 of my payments and roll the remaining 3 into my new lease? I'm not quite sure how to approach this one with the dealer.

And, do I need to ask them for this offer in writing? I'd hate to go to the dealer and it changes. Thanks!!

That sounds pretty high. Go figure the invoice cost for the car as you have it equipped and compare that to the dealer's price for the car, destination, and any doc or prep fees. If you are not within $500 of invoice, you are paying too much.

If you bargain down to or near invoice, there is no money left to pay off your old lease - so that will be up to you. Either you write the check or roll the negative equity into the current deal - neither is a good deal. What *I* would do is simply wait for the current lease to be over and turn it in, then worry about a new car. Even if the rates are higher at that time it will be FAR cheaper than paying 5 extra lease payments. Say your current lease is $450 a month, that is trowing away $2,250 to get out of the car early. No way would a deal 5 months from now be that much worse.

You can see what you current car is worth on trade compared to its current buy out price. If your car has held value well, you may can get the dealer to buy it from the lease bank for the buy out price (or even more for money in your pocket). If not, it may be cheaper to sell them the car and pay a little into it to make the numbers work. Paying lease payments includes interest and usually sales tax and the total of the payments may be more than the cash you need to make up the difference between what it is worth and the buy out. If you car is not worth even close to buyout, you either have to just keep it or pay the last payments one way or the other.

If you decide to do the deal now, if the dealer does not buy your trade, then do not turn it in now. Keep driving it, you are paying for it. There can also be extra fees for doing an early turn in above just the last 5 payments.

Thanks Dennis. I priced the car on Edmunds and got an invoice price of $37,781. So the $38,873 is about $92 over invoice. Is the Edmunds price wrong?

The dealer had no problem accepting my price. But, another dealer said that price was way too low and to jump on the car if it was real. (Don't know if they were just trying to call my bluff and get me scared)

In regard to my Pathfinder, I'm currently 1,300 miles over my allowance, so I'm basically driving a taxi! I called NMAC and there is no charge to get out of my lease early. I just have to pay the remaining payments. The dealer said they could work something out to pay some of the payments and roll the remaining payments into my new lease. I'm only looking to get out of the Pathfinder early because I'm over on miles. If I wait for my lease to end in September, I'll probably be coming out of pocket for excess mileage about $1,700.

Double check the invoice at carsdirect.com and maybe kbb.com - see if all the numbers add up. The Edmunds price may not have had the destination charge in it. The dealer that gave you the quote could have also added a doc fee on top of the price later on in the deal.

Check the Edmunds, KBB, etc trade value for the Pathfinder and compare to the buyout price (get NMAC to give you the current buyout price w/o tax). If they say it is $15k (for example) and trade value is $14.5k (for example) then make the dealer buy it (rather than turn it in) since then it only costs you $500 rather than 5 payments.

Hi Dennis,

Edmunds and Carsdirect are $37,781 and $38,198, respectively. The price he is selling it for is $37,824.\

I looked up the value on the Pathfinder and it's $17,425 on KBB, $19,092 on Edmunds. My buyout is $21,767.71, so I guess I don't have much room to bargain there. The suggested retail is around $22K to $23K, but that's still no incentive really for them to buy it out.

Guess my only option is to roll the payments?

Getting in the G37 will make me feel a LOT better though!

They were giving me $500 to pay off my last saab lease payt. However, after reviewing the dealer's lease info I was actually paying myself off - Prior Balance listed in 2 places = $500.

This is what we settled on....
$492.00 lease payt
$709 cash due (1st mo + DMV fees)
plus they are giving me a check for $500

The cost of vehicle was close to $38,000 with everything included except nav.
cap cost was $34, 700 (approx)

I never like to put $$ down on vehicles to lower monthly payts since you lose that money if you totalled the car the next day.

They had a price increase for all Gs made (or shipped?) from February on. If they are leasing you a pre-increase car then it is $250 or less cheaper at invoice. The exact amount depends on the model and options.

Actually, you can take the MSRP of the car in question - or take the residual and figure the MSRP and it will match either the number at Edmunds or carsdirect.com then you will know the right invoice.

Is the $21k number the current buy out or the residual on the lease? The current buyout should be 5 payments of principle and taxes cheaper than the end of lease price. In any case, it sounds like there is too much difference in the prices to make it work.

What you could do is pick some number between $0 and 5 payments, take that off the buy out price and ask for dealer to give that to you to buy the Nissan. So if 5 payments is $2,500 then ask them to give you $1,500 less than the buyout for it (and you make up the difference or roll it into the new deal). Since they can retail the Nissan, they may be willing to do it to move another G.

How much are the over mile fees on your lease and how many might you be over at lease end? That might still be less money than paying all the payments.

Be sure to get enough miles on the new lease, whenever you do it. Be over miles limits your options and kills the value on the car - making it expensive to return or hard to sell if you need out early.

Just curious...On your MSRP. You said the MSRP was $45,197? I just leased a G37 Journey automatic, with Premium Pkg., Nav., pkg., Premium Tire & Wheel (and let's not forget the ever-popular cargo net!) actually in the same color combination as you describe but the MSRP was $42,075. Do you have other things included?

I was able to negotiate down to invoice price before having to pay about $500 for "doc" and misc.fees that I paid at deal signing.. So the dealer made their money in that. BTW, I had two payments left on my current car and decided to pull the trigger on the G37 anyway so I could get the color I wanted. Probably a bit more prudent to wait two months, but I sure enjoy the Infiniti.
