I think that's a decent price but since that was their opening offer, they may go lower. Invoice is $31,502 according to Kelly BB. Fyi, the VPP price (available to Nissan suppliers) is $31,757. There are costs built into the invoice price that the dealer recoups if he meets his sales quotas so ultimately he will make a little more than $500 at your quoted price.

Thanks for your reply.

Last night, I read through almost all posts in this discussion from March to Nov 2004, hoping to find the price change trend through the rest of the year before holiday season. Year 2004 and year 2005 are comparable, in that they are not end-of-model-year and no new model is expected the following year. Therefore, the real-world price change history of last year should mirror what will happen this year.

A summary of what I found:

1. At March of 2004, the best price reported in this discussion is about $200 above invoice.

2. From April to July, no better price was reported, and $200 over invoice is still the best price reported.

3. From August to September, some people were able to get G35X at $700 below (!) invoice. Many people got invoice price.

4. On both October and November, some outrageous deals were reported. A few people got their 2004 G35 at $2000 below invoice. The best deal reported was $4000 below invoice!!

5. Starting at November, the discussion of 2004 winded down. I guess the dealer inventory dried up by that time.

6. Regional differences played an important role in what kind of deals people got. Almost all best deals were reported in NJ/MD area.

My strategy :

After going through this discussion, and evaluated my current situation, I try to answer two questions I have for myself: When do I have to make a purpose? What a price can I get at the purchase time?

1. The car I want to replace, a 2000 Camry, is still in excellent condition. I just had its timing belt replaced three months ago. All four tires were replaced during 2003 Christmas time, and they are in very good shape. Plus, I don’t think there will be much snow left to fall this winter, even in Minnesota (snow condition is the main reason to get an AWD). Therefore, probably I don’t need a new car until winter of this year – this will be November of 2005.

2. Based on the price trend of last year, October and November are two months when outrageous deals were reported. I guess IF dealers still have a big stock of the current years’ model, they are willing to deal to get room for the next year’s model. The only drawback is that there may not a good selection left, and I may not get the color combination I really like. But I don’t care much about colors, and any color other than red will do for me.

After I went through the above logic, I think I better wait until end of September to look for deals again.

Any comments and input are welcome. Hope our discussion can also help others who are in the market for a new G35(X).

Wait for me for another half a year, baby!!

Your analysis seems about right. I think there were still left over 2004s well into the new year at the larger dealers. Once the 2005s came out with their improved interiors, it became more difficult to move the 2004s without substantial discounts. One Chicago dealer is still showing 30 2004s but unless he has some off site storage, he didn't seem to have nearly that many when I cruised through a week ago.

I imagine the 06 models will be relative unchanged and dealers will be keeping closer tabs on their inventory so there probably won't be quite the selection of leftover 05s at the start of the 06 model year as there were this year.

WOW!!!$4K below invoice in Oct.? I hope that was a BRAND NEW car and not a demo with 5K or even 10K miles on it. With that hug discount he/she can drive for 1 year and trade it in with almost not losing money.

I am very interested in a 2004 G35X. I went on Carsdirect.com and its suggested price was $29860 and they forwared me to Infiniti in Lisle, IL.

It was the worst experience doing this on the internet. From the beginning, I told them the exact car/color I was looking for. In a matter of two hours they went from 9 cars down to zero (sure). I asked if they could meet the carsdirect suggested price and they kept asking me over and over what car I was looking for. It was all BS.

I refuse to internet shop for a car after this experience.

I have dealt with them via email also. I think they really try to get you in the store. I believe their inventory changes fairly quickly (they claim to be the largest dealer in the midwest) and they don't do a very good job keeping their website up to date. Got the same "what car are you looking for?" line. OTOH, Fields Infiniti doesn't even respond to website inquiries and ignores you when you walk into the showroom. Business must be good. They've pretty much steered me to a TL.

I have been looking for a G35 in Chicago, and the pricing for a 2004 G35 is all over the place for what new ones remain. The dealership experience also varies from no response (see above post) to response (Orland Park) with an outrageous price about a week after the initial request (not very timely). The approach to trade-in value is equally daunting with about a $5,000 difference on a $18,000 trade amongst the dealerships. Nothing has changed with respect to the sales experience and attempting to squeeze as much as possible out of the buyer. Good luck to all!

I was at this particular dealership on Sunday looking what they had in stock. I saw quite a few 2004 G35's that were marked sold and said new service loaner. Maybe that is why they didn't have any when you called.

This board has been very informative. Thanks to all contributors.

I am in the process of purchasing a 2005 G35x and have settled on a price of $750 over invoice, plus dealer-trade costs to procure the specific car I'm looking for.

I would appreciate your opinions on the wisdom of this deal, and what the cost of a typical dealer-trade might be.

Just got a quote in Atlanta market for 2005 G35 Sedan, base model (w/ sunroof) for $29, 750. The dealer told me that is 1% over invoice. Does anyone know if this is true? Also, do you think I can do better? Your help is much appreciated! Thanks.
