The comments on the Motely Fool link are rather interesting... lots of folks don't agree about the demise of Sirius XM. We'll see how it all turns out but for someone who makes 250 mile drives quite regularly, having the ability to listen to more than just music is a godsend. CDs, iPods, and others can't compete. Recorded spoken words don't quite compare with current news, sports, or talk radio.

Hopefully, they survive.

I hope it doesn't die off as well, other than that I paid for a custom install of a Sirius receiver in my car...I live in an area with very unremarkable broadcast radio, and it is nice to have a venue where I can almost always find something to listen to.

Or if it does die off, something even better replaces it.

I thought the comment that only satellite could give you nationwide coverage of unique coverage (Howard Stern comes to mind), but I do wonder if net radio wouldn't cover most of it. I listen online to stations via Shoutcast, etc. all the time.

I don't know that internet radio for your car will be what sat radio is. I don't know enough about it though. Like you, I tend to listen to radio over the net instead of XM when I'm on the computer.

to me that streaming internet radio in cars will cause the swift demise of sat radio, but I guess it is possible that Sirius/XM will still have the edge on geographic coverage for some time yet.

Did anyone read Autoweek's coverage of the CES show in Las Vegas? Sounds like Sirius is on its way out, while HD radio is the latest up-and-comer. Of course, HD radio expands channel options for free, but it is only available within a given, fairly small, radius of the transmitter. The distinction is unimportant in most major metro areas, but if you are a rural resident it is very important.

For me it is a moot point as the merger killed all the good music channels on Sirius and replaced them with crud from XM. I will be cancelling this month...

And I doubt that Howard Stern's $500 million reward helped them.

well, the scare tactics worked on me, at least.

I already have a contract on our primary receiver, but pay monthly on my secondary because they had no "deals." Received an email last week telling me my secondary will go up to $9.99/mo UNLESS I buy time up front now at the normal $6.99 price. Oh, and they also say they will start charging for using it on the internet unless I buy up front. So I did. Took 1 year on my secondary.

Discount pricing? by drtravel

Bought a new car and it comes with a three-month trial. Received a mailing listing their pricing structure. Just wondering if anyone knows of a way to get a subscription at a discount price. Ran across a few sites that say you can get it for $77/year. Who do I have to badger to get this?
