Anybody know if the Neon is geared lower than the Audi to get maximum utility from the lower engine output? How much difference do aerodynamics make at sub-60 speeds? I'm not an automotive engineer, so if one is reading please weigh in! Many years ago, one of the carmags tested the F150 Lightning vs a Ferrari 350 (or 355, can't remember) and the truck beat the Ferrari 0-60. And then began eating Italian dust as the Ford's bricklike aerodynamics got the better of it. Yes, if driven poorly a RWD car will experience a lot of wheelspin, whereas an AWD car won't. But I still believe that AWD results in less power getting to the road. |

right about drive train loses. they are greater in awd. maybe the answer here is simpler than we think. you might be right, it may be quicker to 60 than 5.9, because factories(like dodge) often underate the 0-60 times of there cars. the best exaple i can think of is when the wrx came out, subaru claimed 0-60 in 6.4 in their adds. now their adds state 5.8 with an asterix. the asterix denotes that the 5.8 to sixty was achieved by motor trend. so maybe your right, maybe it is faster. i believe it when i see a test. by the way, i see great conservativism in dodges claim of the razor doing sixty in 6 flat. it weighs 400lbs less than the neon srt and has 45 more hp. just some food for thought. |

| Do yourselves a favor and don't even consider this car. A neon with a turbo? A naturally aspirated neon has enough problems! My wife's 1996 neon sport (5 sp; 150 hp; 60K miles) has had about a million problems, including the dreaded head gasket debacle (thankfully still under warranty at the time). Pieces fall off the car all the time and it is a death trap. It is out of warranty now (yipes). Hope it will last until early next year when I will replace it with a 2003 Lexus IS300 5sp (thankfully I can afford 3x as much car 6 years later...). If you want more info, check neon's reliability in Consumer Reports - about the worst of any car. | |

| what happens to a neon in a wreck, too (completely unrelated, I know). Not pretty. In a 35mph collision, this girl had to be cut out witht he jaws of life. It took an hour. Everyone else in the wreck (myself included) opened their own doors and walked away. Some even drove. | |

I read post #53 yesterday and was going to write a response about how my '96 Neon has been reliable through all of its 73K miles. But work matters claimed all my time. Then, last night, the damn thing wouldn't start, so I had it towed (thank goodness for my motor-club membership). The shop told me the starter AND solenoid were bad and, oh by the way, there's an oil leak on the bottom end of the engine. It's not the typical dreaded head gasket failure, and the leak isn't affecting oil pressure (unless I let it ALL leak out!) but even so making a real repair would involve taking the engine apart down to the block level, and then replacing all those non-reusable parts. I've been wanting a new car (Impreza WRX) for over a year now, but fears of my company's stability warrant against saddling myself with a new car payment. DjB |

| if you don't drive a neon then you shouldn't be talking crap about them. I drive a 97 neon that runs at 180 horsepower. I've barely done anything to it. I also have a friend who drag races his and it runs 250 horsepower. and talking about handling, the neon is one of the vest handling cars I've been in. cavaliers don't have nearly the power that a neon does. it all depends on who is driving the car and what they know how to do. so all I'm saying is don't knock if you don't drive it!!!!! as for the srt4 it's gonna be one of the hottest cars out and I know you'll see it at the drag strip. | |

| You have any proven dyno slips or track times? How about a full list of modifications? | |

Unless things have changed, I would avoid all Neons. In 1995, my future wife bought a brand new Neon. We met in 1996. In 1997, I bought a 1995 Nissan 200SX SE-R. The SE-R is still running great at just under 100k miles. The Neon was traded in for $3k to a VW dealer. I still think he was a sucker for paying that much. Sitting in the two cars was like night and day. One was a cheap but well-built car... and the other was like sitting in a plastic bucket. The Neon was slower. The Neon held the road a little better... but felt like it might fall apart when you were driving it that way. The Nissan is quieter, more refined and more fun to drive at 99.6k miles than the Neon at half that much. If all you want is low 0-60 times... then buy a motorcycle or look for a late '60s Chevy Nova w/ the v8. If you want a car that is going somewhere besides the track (and the shop) I would look at cars other than the Neon. |

People see 200+ hp and 0-60 times in under 6 seconds for under 20 grand and it makes you want it somewhat. But - It's a Neon... |

and it looks pretty damn good! Better than any Sentra, anyway! The SE-R hasn't exactly set the press on fire with it's reviews. And this LAST Neon seems bent on beating any Nissan Sentra 0-60 by a full second and a half! |
