I purchased mine with 24 mile on it and the transmission had to be replaced at 40,000. Going down the road at 60 mph it just went out on me. No other problems until last month now with 112,000 miles on it the Right tow arm assembly broke off. Which I'm lucky because I had just got off the highway and was driving in the city for about 2 min and then my truck decided to turn right on its own and almost hit two parked cars. Good thing the big beast has great brakes. Cost of that repair was $350.00. Other that that its been a great vehicle. I will buy another one after this one dies. I just bought my wife a 2003 Ford Explorer and she's loving that too death.
#108 of 1953 Excessive "Rattle" at high speeds
Sep 02, 2003 (4:48 pm)
I bought my 03 Expedition only a couple of months ago and have noticed severe loud rattle noises at speeds of 70 to 75 mph. These rattle sounds seem to be coming from the driver and passenger doors or mirrors. I cannot tell. The dealer and I drove the vehicle together and they heard the noise, as well. The dealer response: "Normal for the vehicle"........Very frustrating. The noise drives me crazy. Any help?

It's probably the the roof rack. Whereas older models were metal, the racks are now "plasticky" and don't fit well. Go up on top and shake both front and rear racks. Chances are they will "rattle". the dealer may offer to insulate or pad the rack to make it fit tighter, but ultimately it will have to be replaced because the fit is not snug as it should be and it will still rattle.

Oh yeah -- mine does that, too. Sounds like a glass rattle to me, but I might remove the crossbars of the roof rack to see if that helps. I now rent cars when I have to go on road trips to avoid listening to that nonsense.
I also get a high pitched whining noise that sounds like it's coming from the dashboard at times, anyone get that?
When the car behaves (about 50% of the time) it's okay, but man. God help anyone that buys that new F-150 because if it's got as many fundamental engineering problems as this hunk then those people are in real trouble.

You and I must have gotten vehicles that came one after another off the assembly line. I get the same high pitched whining. Most of the time (but not always) the whining stops when I turn the radio off. This is however only a temporary solution since the noise comes back in a few minutes.
I'm at a loss.......

We had/have issues with our '03 Expy as well, but overall an excellent truck with definately some assembly problems.
We had the vibration in the front end and heard an audible noise as well only in 2wd mode. If switched to 4wd high the noise wuold go away. Had to take it back two times for them to hear it then someone in the dept. heard my description and read back a Ford TSB that echoed my description to a tea. Turns out a redesiged S clip solved the problem.
The other problem we had was that the drivers side window fell into the door while bringing down the window. They replaced the whole window and assy.
Only outstanding problems are a missing plug that goes where the seatbelt goes into the middle seat rear compartment and while driving at speed, we are hearing "marbles rattling" coming from the drivers side door where near where the latch is. That noise is very annoying. So our 3 non maintenance appt. is happening next week. UGGGh. So close Ford........

Please let me know if the next fix for your door works, and what it is. My dealership has a new latch on order in hopes of fixing the "creaking" I hear in my drivers door.
#115 of 1953 missing wireless headphones
Sep 29, 2003 (8:01 am)
I bought a new 2003 Expedition XLT with the rear DVD entertainment system. The brochure said it came with wireless headphones. Mine did not and the dealership says the fine print in the brochure says that Ford can change specs. without telling people. This is hard on the 3 kids and us parents. The cords will not reach to the 3rd row. The dealership says it is Ford's problem and Ford say it's our problem. How can I get these headphones? Any ideas? Help!

They tried to do the same thing with me. I think that it is a scam that the dealers do. They started out telling me that it was an early model that only supported wired models. I pointed out the IR receivers near the player and then they said that Ford could change specs at any time. It's BS. I told them that I wanted a letter from them stating why they wouldn't give me the wireless models, and rather then do the letter they gave me the headphones.
