95k, regular maint, no problems except, an oxygen sensor went at 94000, oh well!!!! I have noticed that this car 1997 altima gxe, is not as easy to work on as the other 2 nissans i have had, the water pump and belt would be a nightmare of a job!!!! most other nissans had much easier access, but no complaints, but would like to change the belt and pump asa preventive maint. Still drives like new!!! Nissan built a great car in 97.

Bought it new in 97 with the GXE trim and auto tranny. Now has 125k and no problems except for the normal wear items. New brakes, tires and a battery. I also tuned it and changed the anti freeze last year. Most reliable car I have ever owned its never let me down. If I had to find a negative it would be that the ride and handling are not "inspired" as in some of the better drivers cars. Road and wind noise could be a little quieter too. All and all a great reliable car that I would recomend.
#522 of 2702 to buy a nissan??

I have been looking into a new/newer car. I currently own a '96 Mitsu Galant with over 175,000 miles on it. The only major problem to date is some clunking which you may have read under the Mitsu forum. That should be fixed w/in the week.
I am still considering another Galant but am not 100% sold. I wouldn't mind something different. The two people I spoke with who own Mazda's aren't impressed at all...I'm surprised. The one woman told me to buy a Nissan anything and that I would be pleased. The new Altima's don't do much for me personally so I am looking into a new/used. Are there any problems I should be aware of before seriously looking? I've read many posts and the most negative comment has been regarding starting. Having come from a VERY troublesome Chevy before, I would be thrilled with a car that ONLY had starting problems. Re: my car search...it definitely has to be an "import"...I won't go back to the "Big 3". Any suggestions or comments would be appreciated. Thanks

Having owned 3 nissans, along with suv's truck from the big three, I would recommend the the new Altima with the 4 banger. Plenty of power, good mileage, death and taxes reliable. Having owned 1 Altima, and 2 sentra's , the Altima has never even had a light bulb break since buying new in 1996, 97 model. 95k, only an o2 sensor, but they are only suppose to last 50-70k anyway. So for looks, good resale value, Altima has them all beat. ??????? there is nothing to compare it to??? unless its smaller or bigger? the 03 Altima has a lot of room. 1st sentra bought for 900 bucks, drove it for 179k, no problems, except rust. 2nd sentra same thing 119k, rusting, sold for 600 bucks, 97 altima, no rust!!!! they built these cars with similar primer under paint, so chips don't show up, neat little things, big three has a lot to do!!! styleing is not there.
#524 of 2702 PCV valve replacement

According to my Nissan dealer you should not have to replace your PCV valve for routine maintenance . I had wanted to change it on my 98 altima as I've done with past cars, but the dealer mentioned that Nissan does not require this part to be changed/replaced. JFT26- if you insist on replacing it I recommend that you purchase a OEM part.

#526 of 2702 Service engine soon light
by vu2000

I have a 98 Altima GXE automatic with 83K miles. The service engine soon light just started coming on 3 weeks ago. This car was just inspected and passed emission test with flying colors. The guy at the DMV said his computer could not make heads or tail of the car's computer error code. This service engine soon light would go off after I filled up with gas(the car, not me) and reappear after the gas rank is down to 70% full. I had changed the fuel filter and new belts 11 months ago, also new platinum tipped spark plugs 2 years ago. Other than this annoying light, the car is running perfectly fine. Does anyone have any suggestion to what is going on with the car. Thanks.

Post the trouble code. Probably an evaporative emission control code.
#528 of 2702 Fuel Intake Problems
by vixpix
Jun 06, 2003 (10:57 am)
I have a 1998 Nissan Altima Sedan GSE with 76,000 miles on it. Recently, I have had some problems filling up my gas tank. I fill it up for like 4/5 bucks and it stops, sometimes some gas even comes out from the intake, it's scary. I've had the purge valve, filler tubes, and gas tank replaced, costing nearly $1,000 and the problem came back. What can I do? I'd hate to take it back to the mechanic and spend more money.
#529 of 2702 02, 03 problems

I dropped by Altimas.net and read about some 02 & 03 owners who have had some major Altima problems, like the engine stalling while driving. There was also a recall for something that could cause a fire!
This concerns me so I was just wondering if the Alt owners here at Edmunds think these are just a few isolated cases, or if Nissan uses inferior parts and manufacturing methods? Do you think the last group of 03's and the 04's will be better choices?
