#1105 of 2710 New Owner: Switch from Premium to Regular?
Jun 30, 2005 (5:56 am)
Hi, I just bought a used 1998 Nissan Altima GXE. Within 2 hours of buying it, the ECM blew off due to leakage from the AC, some luck !!!! Now I am getting it replaced.
However, my question is: the old owner used premium gas only for the car. I am a student and want to switch to regular. Is it ok if I do that? I understand there might be some lowering of performance, but I am happy as long as I don't get knocking and it gives me a smooth ride. I am going to use it for general driving only. I talked to the mechanic and he said the ECM will take care of that, but he didn't sound too sure. Could someone please clarify? I feel so bad already, car breaks down in 2 hours, and now if I have to buy premium gas, I will be in a total mess.
Thanks to all who respond, Bodhi.

I also have a 2005 Altima and have had similar problems. You are correct it is the struts that are bad. Just today I had both the left and right replaced. This is my second time for the right strut. It sounds like you may need new struts. I asked them what is the problem with the struts seeing that I have only had the car for less than 3 months when the first strut was fixed. They told me that the struts installed in the car were defected and that new ones should be fine. Well, guess what? They were not. Lets hope that this time around it works. Good luck.

The most frequent cause for the check engine light to come on is the oxygen sensor needs to be changed. The oxygen sensor should be changed every 30000 miles or so anyway because as they get older or go bad, they cause the engine to burn more fuel. The oxygen sensor tells the computer when to lean out the fuel mixture as the car comes up to temperature. If the sensor goes bad, it puts the computer into a default mode that simply feeds the engine a rich fuel mixture and bad gas mileage.
There are other reasons for the light to come on such as a loose or missing gas cap, a spark plug or cylinder misfiring, or a bad mass air flow sensor. Mass air flow problems are rare. Some auto parts store like autozone or advanced auto parts will reset the light for you for nothing.

i have a 96 altima, my check engine light came on the guy at the dealership said the problem was the egr valve and the knock sensor. The egr valve was replaced but the guy at the dealership said the knock sensor only perfects your car's timing and is not needed.
#1109 of 2710 Light engine shaking
Jul 02, 2005 (6:17 pm)
Ok I have a 1997 altima and a problem I have with it is that it shakes lightly vibrating the car. You can see the rpms moving up and down a little repeatively. The only thing that stops this is when I turn my ac on then the rpm steadies and the engines stops shaking. What the exactly is causing this, it's rather annoying.
Re: Air conditioning not effective [meegs24]
"I have the same problem in my 1996 Altima. For the last few summers i've almost died in my car. Sometimes my air works and sometimes it doesn't. It often doesn't work on really hot days. They air will blow cold for a second or two if at all and then it blows out hot, muggy, wet, nasty air. I had my a/c recharged last week but that didn't do anything. I've talked to many mechanics and no one knows what is going on. If anyone has any suggestions please let me know. My wife and two daughters are dying without a/c. Thanks"
My 97 GXE does the same. Not exactly like that but it doesn't get cool like other cars I've been it. It takes a while to cool down and when it does it's still a little muggy. Maybe Nissan put in a crappy A/C they have to save money somewhere when creating an "affordable luxury"
#1110 of 2710 Transmission/Starting Problems
Jul 04, 2005 (8:55 am)
I have a 1995 Altima. When I get to about 35-40 mph, the RPM increases as I push the gas, but the transmission does NOT shift back down and increase my MPH. My car stays at 35-50 mph, while the RPM climbs to 4000 - 6000. I just let go of the gas and the RPM goes down. Along with this, the gear shifts are very jerky. Also, I have problems starting the car
I'm at a lost and been having this problem for about three weeks. Don't know what to do. Can't find a trusted mechanic, etc. HELP ME PLEASE.

#1112 of 2710 Speed problem Altima 05 se 3.5
Jul 04, 2005 (8:58 pm)
I have a question about the RPM and speed, when i go at 115 miles of speed, the auto trans, never changes to the fifth, and the speed never raise at 5000 rpm. the dealer say to me, that is normal, because the car has gobernor, also in the specs sheet. marks, 250 hp 5800rpm and the max speed in gages is 140 miles.
any of you have similar problem.
i have some troubles w/ unbalanced disk brakes, noisy tires, shock absorbers etc.
The car only have 6000 miles.
i think the problem is into the electronic computer.
please send me info about this, and technical data related that speed & relation of auto trans. when came the shift at what speed.
or if the computer is gobernated what is the maximum speed.
#1113 of 2710 98 Altima EVAP problem "Help"
Jul 05, 2005 (2:11 pm)
I had taken my car to the dealership because the check engine soon light came on (code p1440) and the car would try to stall every time I would stop after the car was warmed up. They installed a new canister and control valve in the EVAP system. The car still acted the same way and the check engine soon light came on again less than two days later. I went back to the dealer and the code was still the same (p1440). Since they fixed nothing I asked to have my old parts put back on( I checked old parts and found nothing wrong). I still have this problem and am looking for advice since the dealer doesn't want to deal with me anymore.
Jul 05, 2005 (3:54 pm)
The dealer put in parts that didn't solve the problem and you asked for your parts back and hopefully a refund and now they "don't want to deal with you anymore". Sounds like you're better off. What kinda crap were they giving you. You paid to fix a problem they couldn't or didn't fix. I don't understand how their service department can stay in business and what happened to the customer should get what they paid for? Am I out of line here folks?
Go find another Nissan dealer or a trusted mechanic, word of mouth is the best recommendation of all and I'd personally write a letter to the owner of the dealership and the Consumer Office of the city you live in. You'd be surprised how that can help. No dealership wants negative publicity at all. Even call a television station that has a consumer watchdog and "sick 'em" on the dealership. Never underestimate the power of the consumer!!!
(We're no longer an Altima owner as we traded our Alty in for a new '05 Mazda3 S and are very happy. We're zoom zooming outta here. Ciao all!)
