Do I have a lemon? Need advice here. by lastetson
Aug 02, 2005 (9:34 pm)
I've had nothing but problems with my 1500, and I'm wondering if anyone can tell me if I can get Dodge to possibly help pick up the tab for repairing my out-of-warranty lemony joypile. Here are the facts:

  I bought a '99 1500 Quadcab 4x2 5.9L Sport off the lot in '99.
At 18K miles, the transmission had to be replaced after it gave out on the freeway. This was covered under my 36K warranty.
At 44K miles, I had to replace the engine bearings, which meant taking the engine out, and of course the car was now out of warranty. That set me back over $2500.
As of 4 weeks ago (now at 55K miles), the engine started running rough, and my gas mileage has kept dropping down and now is at a sorry 6 MPG.
About one week ago, my speedometer went out, and my Engine/ABS/Brake dash lights came on. I read on this site that replacing the rear differential sensor should fix this one.

So... can anyone advise me on whether and how I might get Dodge to make an exception of some sort and fix this truck before it, I don't know, spontaneously combusts next?

Your help is much appreciated,
LA Stetson

Dole,
I had the same problem on my truck a month ago. Mine was the catalyc converter. I also replaced my o2 sensor. The smoke quit and I'm back to 14 to 15 mpg.

I have a 2004 Ram 2500 QC with Hemi that I bought new in Oct 04 and am having the same trouble. At highway speeds when I hit a hole or expansion joint in the road the truck vibrates from the front end terribly, I have to actually stop the truck off to the side of the road to get it to stop this from happening. I have had it to three different dealers and have had no luck, now Dodge has published a three page procedure for trying to fix this problem because they do not know what the answer is either! I am totally disgusted with this vehicle!

I have a 2001 3500 longbed quad cab with 37,000 miles, I have the same problem. It has been to the dealer 5 times, they have replaced; steering box, ball joints, track arm, left tie rod, steering shock and I still can't hold it in the road. The truck has been aligned twice by the dealer. I pulled strings from behind the back tires so they would just touch the front sidewall of the back tires. This projects a parallel line by the fromt wheel on each side. The toe in can be measured from the string to the tire (behind the axel and in front of the axel). My toe in was fine but the front axel is shifted one inch to the left???? While driving I have to hold the steering wheel to the left (a few inches out of center) to go staight. There is no way I know of to adjust this, I constantly have to fight the wheel to keep it in the road.My truck is under warranty till Sept. 2006 or 100,000 miles but I cant stand any more 50.00 deductables and Jim Cogdill Dodge in Knoxville TN does not have any suggestions. CAN ANYBODY HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Chassis dynamics aren't my forte, but a couple of questions:

Is this a two or four-wheel drive?

Has this problem been with the vehicle since day-one?

First, the transmission was replaced, so it appears that Dodge has fulfilled their obligation to you on that issue. Requiring bearings on a 360 at 44K is pretty, pretty rare. Don't know what to tell you.

For the rough running problem, what service or maintenance have you performed. For that year and engine I think you needed spark plugs at 36,000 miles. A six year old truck typically needs ignition components changed by this time, specifically distributor cap, rotor, and spark plug wires. this could explain the low gas mileage, too.

The Engine and ABS lamps being illuminated could mean a number of things, but yes, this symptom is almost always either the rear wheel sensor and/or the speed sensor. I'd bet on the rear wheel sensor on the differential housing.

Based on my experience...with Dodge or any other make...your six year-old truck is not what I would call a lemon. The engine bearings are definitely an anomaly for a Dodge. The transmission is unfortunate, but it appears to be infant mortality. Your other issues are just so very common in any brand vehicle.

Get a tune-up and see where your at with the engine performance problem. If that doesn't cure it, come on back and we'll try to help you.

Regards,
Dusty

P.S. Can you do any maintenance or repair work yourself?

Ram 1500 tranny searches by jcrawford1
Aug 04, 2005 (4:18 pm)
I have a 2001 Ram 1500 318 with 50,000, with trailer package. The tranny will shift out of first early, then skip back to first real fast when it realises it is too slow for second. This only happens with light acceleration, or if I let off while in first, then reapply throttle, as when turning a corner after starting off. Medium acceleration and heavy are fine.

Sometimes, if I do not put in more throttle, it will skip shift several times before settleing down in second. I had the band adjustment at 35,000 as per manual. Dodge says they can not duplicate.Temperature not a factor. Does not do this when valve body manually shifted.

Vacum signal is OK, when observed in situ it is normal range with no flux. I suspect the throttle angle cable adjustment may be out of rig with computed shift point.

I am a muscle car builder, but not familiar with this computer assited gear except in theory.

Any ideas?

I have a 2001 1500 club cab. My dash broke up yhe day I bought it. It had 35000 on it. The dealer refused to replace it, said the warranty did not cover "trim"

I have looked the truck over well. I found some loose bolts on the front and top of the right body to fender mounts, and in the front of the right fender where it bolts to the radiator mounting bulkhead. Other than that, no other defects. I do not think that this was allowing for undue body flex.

I am at a loss to explain it. I have thought about thermal differential fracturing with the ac on and a hot truck, but I cannot accept that as a cause just yet.

Anybody else?
