insulation certainly helps.
the passenger model is not too loud, mine at 17,000 miles has not been a problem. A bit louder on HOT Oklahoma days, over 100 F. and running two A/C units too... The fans are all on, the engine revs higher, the compressors are running, and the main engine fan clutch sounds like it is locked up to pull maximum air over the radiator.

At thos ehot temps, my wife thinks it sounds strange when I downshift to slow for stops. I agree that it is different, but not unusual when an engine revs up and spins down with a fan clutch locked up.

My new fan clutch in my old chevy is the proper heavy duty item (that the van never had from the factory) and it takes some time to loosen up when cold (the oil in the fan clutch is stiff at first) then, when it gets really hot, it locks up again, and sounds more like a propeller than a fan.

The larger engine could easily be quiter depending on design as the inner sides of the cylinders on a V-6 are inside the block instead of exposed. The valve covers, though doubled in number, are also shorter and could be better damped. the injectors could be in the "valley" of the "V" and covered with a shield... all is speculation until we see (hear) one for ourselves.

Finally, Altered has indicated that D-C is bowing to U.S. pressure to deliver a quieter, more insulated van with less of the rattles we have come to expect.

Med511.. It sound that you have an EGR problem even if you do not have an engine light on it. Take it to another dealer maybe to a Freightliner dealer, they have good tech and they cover the warranty. good l.

Sprinter in this country is view some how different than regular van and pck trucks.
My sprinter is dual wheels and here in beutifull Orlando they said that I can not park it in my drive way and that is code enforcement deal. Friday is the day and the officer said that I have to removed it from the drive way because a neighbor don't like it. This is my transportation and if I new that it was like that I would have a single wheels one but now I don't know what to do. HELP

That sounds like a homeowner's association bylaw. Did you read one when you moved in?

What is the proper setting to put in your assyt computer? by ahp691

I want to make sure I am correct before I go down to the freightliner dealer and yell at them. If I remember correctly what it said in my owners manual ( which I can't find at the moment) With the assyt computer telling when to change the oil, you are supposed to take the current mileage and add 10000 to it and put that in the computer as when the oil needs to be changed next. (Using synthetic oil) The computer then counts backwards to the next oil change based on how you drive it. Is this correct? I have had 4 oil changes and they have not once set the computer right. They have not put in the proper oil either. Freightliner of hartford CT if anyne wants to know.

Sprinter Aux A/C unit questions by harryn2

Hi - I have read quite a few of the comments in this forum - great info. I am considering to purchase a high roof Sprinter with the aux A/C unit. Most likely I will wait for the 2007 model and new engine.

The idea is to use this van as a "portable office". Ideally, I would like to be able to run the aux A/C unit which the engine is off (if possible), but plugged into an electrical main 110 VAC. Does anyone know if the aux A/C compressor is run off of the engine directly, or if it is run off of 12 VDC ?

Are there any other issues with this unit ? It looks like it is mounted on top of the van - difficult to find info on this unit.

Thanks

just bought a "new" 2500 shc 140 passenger by surlyoldbill

After looking for a couple months for a 2500 shc 140, that wasn't WHITE, I found one in Texas, bought it, flew out there and drove it back th San Francisco. It's a 2003, and there isn't a manual, so decifering the the dash lights is interesting. What's the deal with the # with the wrench over it on the odometer side? How about the twisty "M" on the right side?

The thing ran great, 75+ mph most of the way in 110+ heat, and the worst mileage I got was about 20mpg. I don't know if it was EVER serviced; the tires have not been rotated, and the oil (the little there was) was black as tar. Not knowing what to put in, I added 3 quarts of 10-40 for the trip home. Now I need to change out the oil; can anyone give me the filter #'s (fram, stp, bosch, etc)? How many quarts does it take?

It has 20k on it, and has the balance of the factory warranty. Is there anything in particular I should look at as far as possible mechanical problems?

Thanks in advance!

The college I work for purchased two 2006 Sprinters for our program. In the course of four months, and 30,000 miles, one Sprinter has experienced the “Sudden Power Loss” problem once, and the other one has done it no less than FIVE times.

In all cases, the problem was traced to the “Turbo Resonator”, which is nothing more than a small muffler that attaches to the output side of the turbocharger, prior to the intercooler.

This stupid little part, which lives in a high temperature environment, and has to contain the boost pressure produced by the turbo, is made of PLASTIC!!! It has a two piece body which is bonded together with an adhesive.

It seems that the current batch of “Turbo Resonators” were not bonded together well enough to survive in the environment they are installed in. When the seal at the seam fails, boost pressure is lost, and the computer thinks that a catastrophic turbo failure has occurred; …….and it drops you into a “Limp Home Mode”, as it’s program demands.

The insidious part of the failure is that since it is a seam that is leaking, it can be leaking badly enough to make the computer think that there has been a catastrophic turbo failure, and still not be visually obvious when the engine is off.

Chrysler-Daimler knows about this problem, but is taking NO action: …….They are not even sending out service bulletins to their dealers on this issue. They are, instead, trying to convince each user that they have experienced a “One-in-a-Million” failure.

This problem, and more specifically the way they are handling it, is going to cost them! ……..It has already resulted in my college deciding to purchase 25 Ford vans instead of Sprinters. (As was originally planned.)
