nescosmo: reply to your query re filters?
In the first instance, I am still finding out a few more statistics to the facts of which are reverent to both Euro specifications and the US regulations which have variations as to which of the main six states have a higher requirements for emission controls, overall they are the same by the last numbers in the prefix to US regulations, some better some not so good, as to the fact the US does not sell a lot of diesel products compared to the other counties that use these fuels as a more cost effective option as opposed to the lesser effective gasoline fuels,
All of the following information is from European Australian and US Govenment enviromential agencies, as opposed to Fuel and oil data sheets from refineries as such as the information may not be 100% correct due to their own problems within their companies structures,, that differ throughout the world.
Mercedes is not forthcoming with information nor is DCX managment in the States, when it comes to needing to know certian specifics as to their products?as if your just a general public nuisance caller! well excuse me, but who buys your products? cheeee" However one call through the right Govemment channel" Youv'e got it inside of twenty minutes, so there is not via the enviromential agencies ! But through Oil manufactures, goverment intervention and Vehicle manufacturers to collude to conspire by threathnig to suspend operations if imposts are imposed upon these companies Daimler Chrysler have been fined millions of Euros for anti competative behaviour and continue to do this today as to price fixing , look at the difference in price between vehicles in Canada and the USA ten grand discounting, some one has to pay and pay, looks like the Canadians are compensating the big discounts at the moment
but thats no different even down under.
OK Sprinter owners there are problems on the US with three main factors, Fuel Oil and filters.
The Mercedes/Dodge engine is meant to run on low sulphur fuel 118p/pm as the lubricating oils are a necessity providing the fuel is clean and free of other contamination
Two you have cold winter and summer diesel fuels for a clean burn, However with the introduction of ultra low sulphur fuels that have a considerable higher corrosive nature [Less lubrication agents ] Mercedes recomend all vehicles use Syntetic oil as to its longer lasting addatives especially with lubrication of the ERG Valve and ring seal componants to preform to their specs, The new Diesel also will burn the piston crowns and cause coking agents to build at a rate that will effect the short term performance of the 2,7 litre engine with the possiable demise of the engine with longer term use of the said ultra low sulphur fuels.
to circumvent the issue one must run an upper cylinder addative to compensate for the lack of lubricating oils that are more consistant to the older fuels , there are two types, one for normal oils, and one for Syntetic oils
The latter to USA specifications are as follows Red Line Syntetic oil RL-200 Diesel iginition Improver 6100 Egret Court, Benica, CA 94510 707-745-6100 *www.redlineoil.com
These products will lubricate the engine prevent ERG Valve failure and preserve the o rings etc the noise factors of the diesel engine: The imdeiate notices will be Maintains injector, ring, and engine clenilness.Boosts cetane-improves start-up warm-up and reduses noise, controls rust and corosion, stabilizes diesel fuel, provides low- tempurture benefits over 30% Kerosene at much lower cost ( Winterized ) Helps prevent low-temputure filter plugging due to wax and ice
EPA registered for diesel fuel use, removes water from the fuelsystem (Winterized )
Overall fuel economy 7.5% Exhaust Opacity 33% reduction, Injection cleanliness 49% injector Flow Improvement.
As My sprinter runs on this fuel I use this addative including an Australian eqivalent There is noticiable difference where in high urban traffic the diesel fumes are hardly noticiable inside of the cabin the Filter is synthetic rated No 8 as to Mercedes Specifications, the aftermarket paper filters might stop a moth from blowing through , apart from this they are totaly useless as to having an average of 30 to 31 micro rating that only meets 1999 Euro 1 specifications or 2000 US EVPA specs Oil filters not as easy as I thought so The local University is cutting up ten of different brands, to work it out, as I can find no specifications on Govenment sites that specifiy the micron ratings'
Simple method to solve fuel , fill up a bottle at the service station shake itup when you get home but also drain some from your sprinters do the same as see if there is any visual comparisssion of differences top should foam white water particle may be present at the top of the diesel fuel should be free of contamintes consistant throughout, no sediment at the bottom of the jar after settling.
if thev fuel remains cloudy for 30 minutes and has sediments at the bottom and lighter contamination at the top of the fuel, then the fuel you are purchasing is of poor quality for what ever reason be it a problem from the pumps fuel lines or production
Noise control Place house carpet on rear floor and front fit with 40 0nce wool carpets guarneteed to cancell the drum like noise in the sprinter Automotave acrylic, nylon is too thin as an effective noise absorber,Wool carpets are perfect absorbers for particle smells such as carbon dioxide and diesel fumes from inside of the cabin if present.
The new 2007 v6 Diesel has been totaly designed for lesser fuels with a much higher burn rate this will eliminate any future problems with fuels as the ultra low diesel drops to less than 10g/ppm by 2008 our refineries five of, with the exeption of Mobil, spent between 300 hundred to 500 hundred million dollars at each refinery to adjust production to meet the specifiacations Mobil was exempted untill 2005 as to the excuse we can't justify the cost? Shevron Caltex did the same with the Clinton Govenment in 2000 saying they would shut down the refinery as to the impost of costings to comply Eurpoe had simular threats of intimidation applied to Govenments there as well Its' a world wide issue.
Happy days Sprinters, theres a light at the end of the tunnel.

Should be getting a sprinter 140 2500 delivered next week. Five month wait.
What will be the dealers and MB's recommendations for fuel. Truckers I have been told will add automatic transmision oil to their deisel for added lube. Anyone doing this for ultra low sulfur fuel?
seems like MB has an incentive to get this fuel changeover right, what with a 100,000 mile warrantee.
Just adding fuel to the discussion. paul

nescosmo Your welcome.
Remember that diesel is the stepping stone for alternative fuel technology for the future, Maufactures and refineries have been slow to pickup on it in comparison to other developed nations Time will tell in the meantime have a fantastic Day
