I am a Electrical Contractor and do service work. I also own a Ford E350 extended van (1989)the BEAST, and get 8 mpg. Can't wait to get rid of. I live in Florida (no hills) I carry 2-2,500 pounds of material with shelving units. Including 10 foot lengths of pipe. The total weight of the BEAST is at 7,200 pounds. Everyone at chevy and GMC tells me to get the 6.0 motor 3/4 ton ext.van. They say the Sprinter will not do the work I need it to do. I also tow a 2,800 pound 19' boat (every weekend) or when the fish are biting! I need a vechile really soon! Other than spending $9,000 more for the Sprinter (I know you get what you pay for)I test drove a Sprinter (No load) it was awesome! (Quiet, turning radius real sharp) I really value your comments and waiting your reply. Thank You! "dmartel"

Towing with a Sprinter? by georgesr

I started a thread about towing with a Sprinter over a year ago on the Casita Club forum:

I'm wondering if anyone on this forum has considered a Sprinter to tow a 2500 pound trailer?

I am looking at buying a passenger version of the Sprinter Van for my large family (7 children). I want to get some feedback from those who have owned and currently have a Sprinter. Your feedback is appreciated.

Does anyone know if there are plans to sell this van in Canada in the passenger version? I sent an email to DC's Canadian office but they basically told me they couldn't let me know because of a variety of factors including industry competition. Gotta love customer, well potential customer, service.

Sprinter cargo van by armchair

I am trying to get a new Sprinter in the next couple of weeks. 140" high roof with no windows, a little hard to find around here (Chicago). Anyone who has driven the full size Chevy, Ford, Dodge Ram and the Sprinter knows the Americans need to go back to the drawing board. Have a 2000 G3500 Chevy cargo van bought new. I was using a 73 VW bus for service work (I am a plumber) before but needed something larger after 6 years. I missed the VW's efficiency, build quality, and driving characteristics. It had 293,000 miles on it and felt tighter than my Chevy does at 23,000. The Chevy gets a pitiful 7mpg city, 10 highway. Not to mention the crawling around in the dimly light cargo area, laughable build quality, and the fact that it is as much fun to drive as a living room couch. With comparable options, the Sprinter is not much more, not to mention the fact that it will save me $350 a month in fuel costs. Finally we are no longer forced to buy a lumbering, gas eating, poorly made American van.

Armchair - it was nice of you to tell us all of the good features of the VW van and all of the bad features of the Chevy van. In fairness you should mention that the VW used the drivers knees as the first line of defense in an accident, didn't have enough power to get out of its own way, and was substantially smaller on the inside than your Chevy van.

With regards to the Chevy, you are dealing with a 1-ton chassis, a much larger and more powerful engine, and substantially more hauling capacity. I will admit that 10mpg is low and is actually lower than most people that I know get with a Chevy van. I am guessing that either it had problems or you had the 7.4l motor in it which means great power but lousy mileage.

I am not a Chevy apologist, I just don't like one sided stories.

I think that the sprinter will be a great van for you and if you get the diesel motor you should get much better fuel economy. Be a little careful in the wind with its high profile and it should serve you well.

Why doesn't this board appear when you use the "browse by vehicle" list on the left and select Dodge for make and Sprinter for model or Dodge and "Sprinter Cargo."
I created a new board because there appeared to not be an existing board.

I saw a Freightliner van today. It seemed to have a number of similarities to the Sprinter. Are these two vehicle related in any way?

Thanks,
Dusty
