#1 of 3 2001 Limted 4X4 Drivers Location Seat problem by bobgriffith

Oct 22, 2001 (1:09 pm)

I have a 2001 Excursion Limited with 4 wheel drive and a Power Stroke Diesel. Purchase new in April, currently 7,000 miles.I am currently engaged in an issue with Ford Motor Company regarding my Excursion and the fact the "Drivers Seat" is not positioned behind the Steering wheel, but rather to the right of the steering wheel, up against the center consol by as much as several inches. When driving, you must sit along the left side of the seat and keep your knee pressed up against the door so you won't slip off the seat. Or if you position your body correctly in the seat cushion, you find your reaching to the left at an angle for the steering wheel while driving the vehicle. Both leg pain in the knee joint and thigh occurs if you are on an extended drive. All others who have driven this vehicle have the same complaint. I have looked at several other Ford Excursion Limited's. Clearly, they all appear to have the exact seating problem. The vehicle was returned to the dealership regarding this problem, a Ford engineer who was called in, took a brief look at it and said "it was within the seat mounting tolerances" I have asked the dealership service director via a certified letter 30 days ago that they please provide me those tolerance perimeters. As of this writing I have heard no further response. I did receive a call from a Ford Customer Representative in Detroit. He asked if I would accept a new 2002 Excursion in replacement of my Excursion. I told him from what I have seen at several dealerships in central Florida, the seat problem appears to be in the 2002's as well and that in my own opinion this would be a lateral move with nothing being corrected. He said he would contact me again in the near future. This was 20 days ago and I have heard nothing else.
I have a genuine fear that should a collision occur there is a real possibility that the driver would not be properly situated for best safety and/or that the inflation of the drivers airbag could possibility strike the driver at such an incorrect angle that injury or fatality may occur.
I am sure your expertise is dealing with the "after the fact of a collision." However, I am trying to prevent a serious after the fact legal argument.
I have no animosity towards Ford whatsoever, I like the vehicle and I am only interested in is having this corrected before it becomes a big issue like the Firestone Tire matter. I personally feel this is epidemic in nature with the Excursion fleet.
Is there any other Owner that has this same problem?
If so, Please E-Mail me ASAP Bobgriffithaol.com

Bob,

What was the outcome? My seat is like yours but Ford did'nt offer me a new truck yet. I think you e-mailed me before about this.
