You name it and I have had problems with it in my 2000 Cadillac Catera. First, about 2 years ago, my car kept going dead on me. I would go out to start it and it wouldn't even turn over. We replaced the battery. That lasted for about 7 months with no problems, then it did the same thing again. We thought it was just a bad battery. Now, we have to plug the car up every other night into the battery charger so we can get it started. We have put about 10 batteries in it so far. We have had EVERYTHING checked on the car from the wiring to all the fuses.
Also have a valve cover leak. You can smell the oil through the air & heat vents. We have to turn the blower off when we come to a stop or the smell of the oil overtakes you. We are upside down in the car about 5000.00 so we are stuck in it. I hate this car and will never buy another Cadillac as long as I live.

I hust bought a used 1997 Catera (two days ago!). There is alot of miles on it though, and I mean alot, 120,000 but I love the car. Right now,it is at the dealership they are fixing the brake pad and I was told there is a nail in the right rear tire. Also, I am seeing a low coolant light on. I guess they will deal with that as well. Apart from that, there is no problems, I had the oil changed as well. Only the light for the coolant and brake pads are lighting. Lastnight though, just after I left the dealership, they called to say that they could not get into the car, it won't start and they had to jump start it. They asked me if i was having battery problems, but i wasn't before i got there. My thing is though, should I be expecting alot more problems? I am a new driver and this is my first car...HELP!!!!!

I have a 1999 Catera which has been ok for the first 2 years but now.......... Fuel pump went which was a tow and $1,200, but now i have the REAL problem terrible oil leak from the top back of the engine. I have been told that the only way to fix is to replace 2 gaskets at about $ 450 each and that the entire job would be about $ 3,900. i'm from Canada so these figures might be higher than in the US. Going through a quiart of oil every 3 days, driveway is a mess. For anyone who knows are there any options here. Would appreciate the help.

I have had this problem on other vehicles. Remove the lights in the trunk and under the hood. I have had both lights stay on after the trunk or hood is shut and that drains the battery. You can't see the lights on because when you lift the trunk or hood the light will come on as they should.
Let me know how you come out or if you have already removed the lights.

I've had a 1997 Cat for 3 or 4 years now and thought we've replaced everything possible. Now the thing just turns over and doesn't start. My husband is determined it's the fuel pump --I'm not convinced. We can't find the fuel pump relay because our owner's manual tells us it is in position #20, but there's no #20 spot. We really wanted to fix this without taking it to the dealer again it's usually $1,400 every time we take it and past experience is that we take it in for one thing and they determine even more is wrong with it. I just want to know where the fuel pump relay is...

I have the exact same problem on my 2002 catera. They charged me a $185 to tell me that it will cost about $2000 to fix the computer. At that point I was to pissed because I just spent $915 for a brake job, which led to replacing all my fuses for another 900, then which lead to the Speedometer,abs/tcs problem which they said will cost 2000. Well, I wasn't going to pay that since it really didn't affect my driving. BUT Now I have leaking antifreeze which I find out is because of a broken heating control switch. Now, I have to find out how much this will cost. If it doesn't cost much, I will fix it and just trade this POS in... of course I will take a big lost, but I just can't afford to keep it any longer.

Gary,
I have had to replace several items...brake rotors, 02 Sensors, Mass Airflow Sensor, and front tie rod ends. Cost at mechanics for parts was usually very high. I got primarily genuine parts on ebay for 1/3 the cost. If you don't mind the wait...well worth it. Other than that the Catera runs great.
