As I said when he had the Chevy dealership I heard enough horror stories to stay away from anything that has his or his former partners name on it. And I don't mean your typical shady dealings I mean out right fraud.

I was looking at a 2008 Elantra SE with Premium Pkg with MSRP of $18265 and would go down to 15.7k,

Dealer said I could get a better deal on 2008 Sonota AT. Automatic 4 cyl.and perfered pkg. MSRP of $ 19,680 will sell for $ 15,454. Plus TT&L This included mudflaps, truck net and matts. You guys think I can get it down to $ 15k even?

To me the biggest thing about buying a car is the variability of treatment you encounter from the dealerships. I know that where you are in the month and how desperate the dealership is to make its sales quota is a factor, but still it seems almost random how one buyer can have a nightmare experience haggling over every dollar, while another can have a great purchase even if not the most informed buyer.
I'd imagine (based on some posts here) that both experiences could be had at the same dealership.

As I related earlier this month, I fell into the latter category this time around. Yes, I typically research prospective major purchases to the nth degree, but frankly hadn't done much research on Hyundai's per se since I was more 'checking the box' of a test drive and establishing a baseline before moving onto more mainstream choices (Honda and Toyota). Three hours of test drives ('08 vs '09, I4 vs V6) later I appeared to have lucked into a 'too good to be true' deal on an '09 Sonata Limited V6 (priced $500 less than an '09 LImited 4 cylinder!) I went home and asked the Costco buyer's service for a quote which came in over $2500 higher, and thus rather than testing other makes (which at best would have been 'as good' but for waaay more money) went back to the dealership the next afternoon to seal the deal before that particular vehicle (the showroom demo) disappeared. Noticed that the "Internet price" (this was at Fitzgerald Auto mall) price on the car's sticker was $400 more than the current price on the Internet for the vehicle, and expected to be told the sticker was correct. Was told instead that 'of course' they'd go with the current 'Net price. Encountered only one half-hearted and almost perfunctory attempt to interest me in gap insurance or an extended warranty during closing, and then was out the door in the new car. (Going late in the day-- such that the mechanics of the purchase processed dragged beyond closing time-- may have accounted for some of the staff's eagerness to finish the deal and go home!)

I guess that as in the rest of life you can be 'good' or 'lucky', but that doesn't make the experience any less frustrating.

Karma probably dictates that I'll pay more that MSRP for my next car, so I'd better make this Sonata last!

Can you be a little more clear what options are on this car? There's no such thing as a "preferred pkg", and the lowest priced package, Popular Equipment Package, costs $650 and makes the MSRP of the car over $20k. Without any options except AT and mats/guards/net, the invoice is nearly $16k so you would be asking for about $1000 under invoice after rebate. Possible? Maybe. They may have some incentives to make it worth their while. Why not make the dealer a firm offer for $15k + TT&L? If they say "OK", you have yourself a car. If they say "no way," you can thank them for their time, say you'll be checking other dealers, and leave. If they go after you, you have a chance. If not, you know $15k is too low--at least for now.

OK, so the MSRP of the 2008 Sonata with the PEP and mats/flaps/net is $20,405, invoice is $19,519. So you are shooting for $1519 under invoice after rebate. Like I said, make them a firm offer and see what they say. They could say yes...

I went there looking for a Elantra SE. They got me interested in Sonota because they could go lower on it.

I told dealer 15k for the Elantra. They said they coudn't go down lower but would need to speak to owner to see if it is possible. They called tonight and countered down to 15.4K. I said 15K is what I want and told them that was my best price and offer is good until Wednesday. If they call tomorrow great, but I am working similar deal with other dealer and we are about the same price with them. Getting there....Why not offer 15k on Sonota, I guess I prefer the goodies of Elantra SE and holding out. After reading the thread on 2009 Sonata it sounds like it might be worth the extra money to get it but I then am getting out reason for buying an inexpensive work commuter vechice.

Well, maybe you'll get lucky and the dealer will need one more sale on Wednesday to make some special sales incentive--and your Elantra will be it.
