Regarding the previous posts - I really think all dealerships are sketchy in some way, that's just the way it is. Here's my recent purchase: I live in Chicago and this weekend I bought a 2007 Sonata with all the fixin's except sunroof (woodtrim, steering wheel controls, cruise etc...). Purchase price was $14,300 before TTL - car has 6400 miles. I love it and feel like I got a good deal, however the dealership, like most, was trying to grind me down for every extra penny they could get. I bought the car from Patrick Hyundai in Schaumburg, IL. All these places play games - after we settled on price they told me that they only had one set of keys. If I wanted a second set (of course I did) it would cost $6 for the key and an additional $212 for the keyless entry remote (100 for remote and 112 for the programming of the remote). I almost walked out - I threw a fit and basically called them out on that B.S. tactic although I ended up paying $56 for the extra key (guy said he would give me the remote for free and 'split the cost' of the programming). I know this was all B.S. and I could have probably got it all for free but at that point I just wanted to close the deal up. Their whole mission is to wear you down, grinding you out for every penny. So that's my story - I love the car it drives like a dream. I hate dealing with salesmen though, it's the only part that makes buying a car a bit painful.

One thing is to try to grind out every dollar(isn't that the same thing the customer is trying to do) and the other is to outright lie. When you read about all the lies that customers tell on these forums to get that last $50 to $100 off and then get downright indignant when a dealer tries to get that last $50 to $100 in profit, it seems a little hypocritical sometimes. What other major item do we buy where we know the invoice price and even demand that we also get the dealer's hold back.(I never have but I have seen posts that do) When we buy a house do we call the builder a shyster because we don't know his exact cost and what his margins are. I know it's a two way street and dealers didn't get their reputations for nothing but it seems with the advent of the internet that we really expect a lot sometimes. |

I was looking at a 2008 Elantra SE with Premium Pkg with MSRP of $18265 and would go down to 15.7k, Dealer said I could get a better deal on 2008 Sonota AT. Automatic 4 cyl.and perfered pkg. MSRP of $ 19,680 will sell for $ 15,454. Plus TT&L This included mudflaps, truck net and matts. You guys think I can get it down to $ 15k even?

As I related earlier this month, I fell into the latter category this time around. Yes, I typically research prospective major purchases to the nth degree, but frankly hadn't done much research on Hyundai's per se since I was more 'checking the box' of a test drive and establishing a baseline before moving onto more mainstream choices (Honda and Toyota). Three hours of test drives ('08 vs '09, I4 vs V6) later I appeared to have lucked into a 'too good to be true' deal on an '09 Sonata Limited V6 (priced $500 less than an '09 LImited 4 cylinder!) I went home and asked the Costco buyer's service for a quote which came in over $2500 higher, and thus rather than testing other makes (which at best would have been 'as good' but for waaay more money) went back to the dealership the next afternoon to seal the deal before that particular vehicle (the showroom demo) disappeared. Noticed that the "Internet price" (this was at Fitzgerald Auto mall) price on the car's sticker was $400 more than the current price on the Internet for the vehicle, and expected to be told the sticker was correct. Was told instead that 'of course' they'd go with the current 'Net price. Encountered only one half-hearted and almost perfunctory attempt to interest me in gap insurance or an extended warranty during closing, and then was out the door in the new car. (Going late in the day-- such that the mechanics of the purchase processed dragged beyond closing time-- may have accounted for some of the staff's eagerness to finish the deal and go home!) I guess that as in the rest of life you can be 'good' or 'lucky', but that doesn't make the experience any less frustrating. Karma probably dictates that I'll pay more that MSRP for my next car, so I'd better make this Sonata last! |

| What kind of extended warraty can you get or need on these cars? | |
