2008 Sonata GLS 4cyl manual - final by mpansare1

OK, so I got the car (08 Sonata GLS, 4 cyl, manual transmission, 'strippo', only options were cargo mat, cargo net and floor mats, XM radio 3 month sub - this is by default). Final cost before TTL was $14,300. Rebate was taxed (the 3K rebate was deducted after the full sales price...I guess this is required by law). This is in MD. No hassles, took about 1.5 hrs from test drive to getting out the door. Build date was Jun 07 (this tells me Hyundai has a lot of excess inventory, the ODO read 7 miles when I took it out for the drive). They are trying to complete the pass. airbag recall campaign today, so I don't have to bring it in again. Unfortunately I don't qualify for the military (500) and college grad (400) rebates, else I could've knocked another 900 off the price. Got 2 free oil changes too....

Big Sonata discounts expire 4/30? by backy

FWIW, I got an email from HMA the other day re the big deals on Sonatas. (I think I automatically got signed up for these emails when I entered a contest for a free Hyundai at my local auto show.) Anyway, the email noted that the big discounts on 2008 Sonatas would go away on April 30. That could be just typical marketing hype, since there will still probably be some 2008 Sonatas around come May 1 and dealers will need to get rid of them, but Hyundai may shift its rebate money more to the 2009s at that point. The dealer closest to me has no new 2008s on their lot, but a lot of 2009s. And I am seeing more an more ads for the 2009s in my local paper, with less mention of the 2008s.

Congrats on your new Sonata! The fact that it's been sitting since June with no test drives on it is more indicative of the lack of popularity of stick shifts in cars in this class, more than anything else IMO. But it was good for the dealer, though. All this time, they were able to use it for their "loss leader" advertising, e.g. "Sonatas starting at under $15,000!!"

Deals on the 2008s are not "going away" until they have no more to sell since the 2009s are out and the 2009s are more than just a model-year change. The 2009s are actually much nicer.
Makes no sense to get a 2008 unless you get a really great deal on it.

As I said, it could be just the usual marketing hype. I guess we'll know for sure around May 1 or 2. A lot depends on how many 2008 Sonatas are left after April 30. As I noted, at least some dealers are out. Another tactic Hyundai could use is to cut the public rebates on the 2008s (and increase them on the 2009s) while increasing the manufacturer-to-dealer money on the 2008s.

The 2008s are still the best deal compared with the 2009s. Until the 2009s come out with a $3000 rebate they are just not worth it, IMO. There is at least $1000 increase in their base price, in most cases it's closer to $1500 and unless you can that $3K rebate plus work the price down, it is just too soon to buy one. Unless you are one of those that just have to have the latest and newest regardless of price. I doubt you will see huge price cuts until the start of next year on the 2009s, they still have lots of 2008s left, even some 2007s!

There is at least $1000 increase in their base price...

Not quite--the GLS went up only $450. Is that too much to pay for the 5AT, much nicer interior, more power, better front seats, and improved ride and handling? I think it's pretty reasonable, since inflation alone went up about 3% in the past year--which would be a $600 increase on a $20k car. That means the much improved GLS actually increased in price less than the rate of inflation.

There's also a $500 loyalty rebate on the 2009 Sonatas now, so if someone qualifies for that it's about a $2000 difference compared to the 2008s. I agree that it is a big difference, more than I would be willing to pay. But I think we'll see incentives increase on the 2009s after the 2008s are depleted. Sonata sales are off (while Elantras' are shooting up) and it's a tough market and tough economy, so I don't think we'll have to wait for next year for bigger incentives.

hi guys,

i just bought a elantra GLS 2 days ago here in Gurnee, Illinois. i've posted this message in elantra board and didn't really get any response yet. so here i go again.

i bought the car from only local dealer here in gurnee, illinois. i think i got screwed big time. i haven't been this board for awhile, and i didn't know people are buying GLS for under 15k. i didn't have a time to research and i really needed to buy a car because my beater stopped in the middle of the road. i was sick of it, so i decided to be smart and buy a hyundai. i loved the fact that i don't have to worry about a thing for 10 years, and i loved the car when i rented few months ago.

2008 white elentra GLS auto popular option pkg + mats + mudguard
purchase price: $16789
trade in : $700(1990 civic lx wagon)
Sales tax 7%: $1138.48
P.T.A tax: $5
Registration (inc/title/lien/plate fee): $80.00
Doc: $150
electronic filing fee: $25.00
Total Out-the-door: $17482.48

no rebates instead I got 4.5% on 72 months

basically i bought it for 17.5k OTD for GLS! i didn't get any rebates because i got 4.5% for 72 months. My credit score was 611 my wife’s(primary) was 650, but she is a grad student with no income. even if i didn't get the rebate, i still feel like i paid too much for the car. For that money i feel like i should be driving a sonata or at least SE with the ESC.

i went back to the dealer today and showed this forum and how much people are paying and they wouldn't believe any of posts here. i got angry and i almost raised my voice, but i calmed down and told them that i will find out if it is true or not. they said it's impossible to buy elantra that cheap. they are(2 salesman plus the manager) basically saying that this board is full of liars. they laughed at the posts that i showed them. and they basically said to located any dealers where people can get the deal like that, so they can buy cars from them. they would be millionaires if they can buy cars so cheap like that. they even told me that even the used ones don't go low like that.

from reading this board, people are buying gls for under 15k, and under 16.5k for SE. and that's a generous number.

well, i'm here to ask you guys for a help. i don't know what to do, so please give me some advise. at this point, i don't even care about the money anymore. i just want to prove them wrong. I just want to do something because If I don’t, then I’m just settling for it. car buying should be fun, but i'm having no fun at all. My pride won’t allow it, but I don’t even mind trading this car tomorrow even if I’m losing 4000 bucks in negative equity. i paid almost 2500-3000 dollars more. most likely i'm gonna feel really bad about for a long long time.

here is things i'm thinkin about going to do.

1. could you any of you guys email me a copy of the sales receipt? I’ll post my email address if it’s ok to post my email or phone number. i want to show the reciept to the dealer.

2.i'm thinkin about writing to hyundai. I don’t know what to say yet, but I want to let them hear my story. Yes, there are plenty of car buyers paid 500-1000 more than what others are paying. I can live with that. But it seems like I paid 3 grand more.
3. i'm going to go to another hyundai and will try if i can buy a GLS 14.5k OTD.

4. what would you guys do if you were in my situation?

5. doesn't hyundai have any return policy? car only has 60 miles on it.. wish they had 7 day return policy like carmax..

Yes, it’s all my fault that I didn’t do any research. i was too busy and i needed car, so i didn’t even think about it. maybe i should not have came to this board at all.. lol I did stay there for 7 hours to test drive every one of hyundai's and negotiate the price and payments, etc.

by the way, i bought a santa fe from them 3 weeks ago. Yes, I bought 2 cars from them. lol

4. what would you guys do if you were in my situation?

What I would do is chalk this up to buying a car unprepared and paying the same thing as 50-70% of American buyers do. You didn't get screwed. There is absolutely no legal recourse for you either and trading it in at this point would just be throwing good money after bad. Be upset with yourself. I know this dealer you are referring to and it is one of those dealers that has a seperate sticker on the windows adding junk add-ons for crazy prices. One look at those extras should have sent you packing. There are probably 5 Hyundai dealers within 30 miles.

I've also had dealers tell me that "nobody can sell these for that price---tell me who and we'll buy from em". Well, even if you did have an sales doc from someone---they still wouldn't match it. A lot of them just know somebody else will pay more.
