From a practical point of view the Forester is far closer to being a SUV, if the Honda CR-V and Suzuki Grand Vitara and Vitara are SUVs, than they are sports cars. With the slalom times of the Legacy sedan I think the Legacy wagon is quite a ways from a GT as well. I watch both Foreign sedan and American SCCA racing I have have seen Honda, Acura, a few Nissans, now and then a Mazda, some Ford Focus but very few racing Legacys. That being said it is nothing against the car or Subaru. It is something that has been said earlier in these forums.   SUVs have morphed into something different than those of us that have had them believed they were. Mini suvs may be nothing more than tall wagons and wagons are little more than long hatches, like the WRX. I don't mind that manufacturers can't say station wagon without ducking. It just seems that calling wagons GT, something they can do because we are losing the meaning anyway, is just as silly as avoiding the term Station wagon.

given the loss of clear distinctions between wagons, hatchbacks, SUV's, crossovers, trucks, etc., i cant get too worked up about the letters the manufacturers stick on the back of a vehicle. most bottom of the line current models are superior in many performance categories to "GT" racers of earlier years, so i guess i should just go to the winnebago GT discussion and keep an eye out for news of the winnie turbo. Well then, you gotta get out and watch mike (paisan) drive. He's a wild man. He's in the NY/NJ area, though he runs NASA autocross, not SCCA.   He used to run his dad's Legacy, and would routinly finish 2nd or 3rd in his class. And keep in mind it's a quicker class than the Maxima and Accord V6s compete in. His times were well ahead of those cars. This in an automatic 2.2l Legacy.   He's now running a 2.2l Impreza and placing about the same, near the top every time.   Clearly he's quick, and the driver has a lot to do with it, but so does the AWD.   Wasn't is grass roots motorsports that ran an Odyssey against an E-type and another classic sports car, and the minivan won?   -juice

That someone autocrosses? I almost forgot autocross or Solo so I will look and see how they do in class. I will get back on that.

Still, doesn't look like a Forester, Legacy, or a legacy wagon. I am sure people can try to get almost anything into some kind of class for Solo racing. Doesn't add sporting heritage or ability to the car. What class does Subaru run in in Solo? Stock what, modified what? I will look first chance I get. Someone that posted in some other forum I was in even raced a Insight in Scca Solo. Does quite well in class I think. I am not ready to concede it is a sports coupe.

Tell you what, I'll ask him to join this topic to share the info, it's 2nd hand and obviously my memory is geezin'.   I think he drove the Legacy before they formalized the autocross team.   <off to find mike>   -juice

I'll auto-x or track just about anything!   I've auto-xed:   Outbacks WRX Wagons WRX Sedans XT6 AT XT6 MT Impreza L Impreza RS Grand Am Sedan SVX RX7 Honda Civic Hatchback (70hp 83lbs torque 4MT) Legacy L Legacy L Wagon   In SCCA the outback runs in H-stock. In NASA it runs in Group G.   The Outback wagon did great at the auto-x. Lots of power etc. Most of the cars I auto-x are ATs as well.     Took 2nd place that day in class (about 7-10 cars in class)   -mike

so much about Solo. They will race about anything. Still, it seems quite a stretch to call one a GT after a road racer. What class is the Legacy wagon? How do you get passed the weight penalty? I take that back, you are running stock. Does any of this carry over to Pro Solo?   It must be remembered my grass roots racing in 1/8 and 1/4 mile drag racing and I don't see many wagons running. I have only been to SCCA events in our area. What district are you running in? I'll try to follow your progress.

so we are on the same page. We see racing SUVs in desert racing as well but I am not willing to call them GT SUVs either.   But when I said I watched SCCA and foreign sedan racing I was talking about the Touring car races in both the US and Europe. At the Atlanta race on June 27-29 I didn't see one Subaru let alone a Subaru wagon. They did race a hatch or two I believe. Out of 44 cars I don't believe I saw one wagon. Can anyone confirm if Subaru has a touring car team and how they are doing?
