Wrangler or WRX? Why is it that they are cross-shopped? I've seen that more than a few times. Wild. -juice

Over the next 6 months (or sooner) I will most likely be purchasing one of the following vehicles: Honda Pilot, Toyota Highlander, and 05 Subaru Outback (XT). I have checked out the non-turbo (2.5i) version of the Outback, and my parents and friends own a Highlander, but have not had a chance to drive a Pilot yet.. Although I have never owned a Honda, I have visited several dealers in the metro DC area, and have had terrible experiences (I will never go to Landmark Honda!) My experiences is that the Honda dealers are very arrogant, and want to play some serious price games (I mean really, marking your cars 2-3K OVER MSRP!!!) I hate games. All of the Subaru and Toyota dealers I visited were very polite, seemed to want my business and were much more resonable on price (no games!) While I really like the Outback, the HL seems to be a better value and offers numerous configurations, thus allowing me to get the exact features that I want (V6, AWD, sunrrof, side curtain airbags, no leather, 3rd row seating). The disadvantage of the Outback is the packaging. If I want a sunroof, I have to buy leather with all the bells and whistles. I am also concerned about the marginal safety tests conducted on side impact (even though the car has side curtain airbags!) As for pricing, the HL is also going to be about 2K cheaper.. I am not sure about the Pilot, but it seems a little too boxy and large, and I have also read reports that Honda's quality has slipped somewhat over the past few years (transmission issues). Would be interested in hearing from owners of any of these vehicles..

Replying to: rsholland (Aug 25, 2004 5:22 pm) Understood, Bob - was just going by the comparative physics of the Magnum AWD and a comparable SUV. Better aero design, V6 or MDS Hemi with less curb weight means less right foot needed, lower COG should yield less body roll... kcram Host Smart Shopper and Wagons Message Boards

I guess it's more of an attitude cross-shop than a vehicle cross-shop. You know, "as I approach my mid-life crisis which of my buttons should I push?..." lol. If 4 wheeling is a huge factor , then the Wrangler would be better. All other decisions point to the WRX for more driving pleasure. Can always get the WRX wagon for more utility. Jeeps can be scary on the highway....WRXs can be fun. IMO |

and it's valid for you. Others' buttons may be pushed in different ways. Kid down the street from me has a Sahara with the rag top that he uses to commute 20 highway miles each way every day. To me it would be a laughable decision, but he loves the open top, and the wind and the sun, yada, yada yada. He could care less about 0-60, skid-pad G's, refinement or residual value (obviously!) But he loves his ride - it pushes more of his buttons than a WRX would by far. Me? I'd be bidding against you for the Subie (of the two choices.)
