while I was in Missouri for a camping vacation the distribution between SUVs and Pickups was pretty even.

Not surprising...there are lots of big cities in Missouri, no?

Most people had one of each in their driveways.

Well, that tells you something, don't it Even if one is for HD tasks, the other is for...what?

Isn't that what's called the Missouri compromise? Or was that when they agreed that half the people would say "Mis-su-ri" and the other half would say "Mis-ur-ruh?"

Magnum has a huge wheelbase so passengers have more rear leg room, but there is less head room and less cargo space than in an Outback, FWIW.

highender: while I agree, note that those cars are called SAVs and other acronyms besides SUV.

I liked the Endeavor I test drove, also. But it's also a blend of wagon and SUV, not pure SUV.

it's my observation, people with farms/ranches in the Rocky Mtn. Region/western U.S. are big on Suburbans. Much more common than anything else. Of course, any farm or ranch that's actually in any type of production agriculture WILL have a pickup--full-size, Ford-Dodge-Chevy/GMC.

FWIW, my "midlife crisis" vehicle (anticipated in 3 - 5 years) will be either a Wrangler or a WRX wagon. Probably a jeep would fit me better, but test drove a wrx a while back--wow!

Modern minivans are the 1972 Country Squire wagons of today. I think that's why true stationwagons have faded in popularity.

The other would be to take the entire family out. Pickups can only carry 6 passengers not very comfortably lol. I dont know about A LOT of big cities but there are big cities in every state. The other difference i noticed was there weren't too many luxury cars driving around.

Jeber that is true. The Pickup is the work truck while a second vehicle would be the family vehicle. Be it Car, SUV, minivan, whatever.

Wrangler or WRX? Why is it that they are cross-shopped? I've seen that more than a few times.

Over the next 6 months (or sooner) I will most likely be purchasing one of the following vehicles:
Honda Pilot, Toyota Highlander, and 05 Subaru Outback (XT). I have checked out the non-turbo (2.5i) version of the Outback, and my parents and friends own a Highlander, but have not had a chance to drive a Pilot yet.. Although I have never owned a Honda, I have visited several dealers in the metro DC area, and have had terrible experiences (I will never go to Landmark Honda!) My experiences is that the Honda dealers are very arrogant, and want to play some serious price games (I mean really, marking your cars 2-3K OVER MSRP!!!) I hate games. All of the Subaru and Toyota dealers I visited were very polite, seemed to want my business and were much more resonable on price (no games!) While I really like the Outback, the HL seems to be a better value and offers numerous configurations, thus allowing me to get the exact features that I want (V6, AWD, sunrrof, side curtain airbags, no leather, 3rd row seating). The disadvantage of the Outback is the packaging. If I want a sunroof, I have to buy leather with all the bells and whistles. I am also concerned about the marginal safety tests conducted on side impact (even though the car has side curtain airbags!) As for pricing, the HL is also going to be about 2K cheaper.. I am not sure about the Pilot, but it seems a little too boxy and large, and I have also read reports that Honda's quality has slipped somewhat over the past few years (transmission issues). Would be interested in hearing from owners of any of these vehicles..

KC, I can buy the more space (passenger space, not sure about cargo space), but not the higher mpg or easier handling. At least not yet, as the AWD Magnum has yet to show its face.

Understood, Bob - was just going by the comparative physics of the Magnum AWD and a comparable SUV. Better aero design, V6 or MDS Hemi with less curb weight means less right foot needed, lower COG should yield less body roll...

I guess it's more of an attitude cross-shop than a vehicle cross-shop. You know, "as I approach my mid-life crisis which of my buttons should I push?..." lol.

KC, it probably depends on which Subie you're talking about. I doubt the Magnum AWD will out-handle a Legacy GT wagon. Other Subies, perhaps (?), but not the GT. The COG is very low on that model, and it been reported to be a world-class handler by many.
