I have a 2002 with a similar starting problem... I narrowed my problem down to the alarm / ignition kill system would not let the car start. The starter worked, the engine turned over but would not start. I never found the actual alarm setting to change (dealer only option) so I had a remote start system installed and that cured my problem (plus the wife now enjoys being able to start the car from inside the house on cold days).

I think I may have the solution to our starting problems. I do believe it is the fuel pressure regulator. Dealer says it will cost about $160.00 to have fixed. Warranty on this part is 5 years or 60,000 miles.

That's what I was kind of suggesting last week, that it sounded somewhat similar to the (more abrupt) way my 2003 had behaved... and the anti-theft system was the culprit.

Try a faster fill setting on the nozzle. I once set the nozzle at the lowest (1 of 3) setting to get all I could and it didn't shut off. Spilled gas all over the side of the car. Won't do that again.

I have 2007 sonata 32000 miles, just did 30000 miles service. Recently I found after I drove 10 mins, my car has very strange noise, like squeaking something. I have a friend who also has the same car and did same service, but in different state,
accidently she has the same situation as mine. Is there anyone have the same situation? We don't know if this noise related to service or not. And we cannot figure out where is this noise come from. Not from brake, we are sure, because when we are accelerate, we heard noise, and my friend said when she click brake, the sound will gone. I need to test this on my car.
Thanks for any advise.

I see you made your initial post a couple of weeks ago, but I wanted to see if you had any kind of an update.

When I first bought my '09 Sonata GLS manual, I noticed the exact same thing you're describing. I was also able to smell a burning odor in the car. When I parked the car, I also smelled it around the wheels and grille.

However, the burning smell I had did go away around 1,200 miles. I figured that the smell was just some excess fluid burning off, or engine belts getting broken in.

Even though you and I experienced the same thing, if you're still experiencing this problem, it may be something else. Next time you smell it, try pulling off the road and popping the hood to check if anything is smoldering or giving off a little bit of smoke. It could just that one of your belts is too tight, or there may be a belt that has some kind of engine fluid (oil, etc.) on it, and the friction of the belt is causing the fluid to burn.

In any event, you may want to take another crack at seeing the service department where you purchased the car. If they aren't able to give you a satisfactory answer, you may want to try another local Hyundai dealer (if there is one) or an independent service shop. An independent service shop may be able to identify the problem, but make SURE you take it back to your dealer to have it serviced - as such a problem will be covered by your warranty.

At any rate, I hope that helps. Please let us know how it turns out!

misfiring by highdef

I have a 2003 GLS and I have had a big problem with my car misfiring. I seem to notice it mostly when I am sitting still like at a stop light. It gets really bad when there is a draw on the engine such as the air conditioner or the heater. It really seems like the car has the hiccups. No problems starting or dying just surging. My mechanic says it is not throwing any codes. He has replace spark plugs twice, spark plug wires, timing belt, water pump, checked the fuel filter which is in the gas tank and he has done just about everything he knows how to find the problem. This car has 98000 miles on it and before I take it to the dealer I wanted to see if anyone has had this problem.

Air admittance valve controls the idle speed.

It could be any number of things. I'm curious, does your mechanic work for the dealer? I'm guessing he doesn't, because you mentioned taking it "to the dealer" to have it checked out.

You should really consider taking it to the dealer immediately for two reasons: 1) they specialize in Hyundai and they may know exactly what it is, 2) it may be an issue that is covered under your 10/100,000 warranty. You only have 2,000 miles left on your warranty, so you may want to get in there as soon as possible.

I know you were looking for an answer and, unfortunately, all I can tell you is to take it to your dealer. But, hey, you never know, it could be an issue that is covered by your warranty and you won't have to pay a dime!

Thanks for responding. I had almost given up on getting any kind of answer. I'll try to pop the hood next time this happens to see if I see something.
