2003 Sonata sedan V6 (hole in block) by lindalee65

I took my Sonata to my mechanic for routine maintenace. He found antifreeze leaking underneath the timing belt cover. Also, found a drilled hole in the block, which he can't explain. Said it had to come from factory. He has worked on other Hyundai's and he said he has never seen this before. He has checked the water pump, radiator, timing belt, everything okay. Said it's leaking behind the a/c compressor, passenger side. I always look underneath the car and never see any puddles. Mileage 91,000 all highway. Car has been faithful in oil changes every 3000 miles with the 60,000 maintenance. Car has never given any warnings or messages, runs great. I dropped it off at the dealership last night to have them take a look at it. My mechanic thinks whatever it is should be covered underneath the 100,000 mile warranty. He seems to think it has something to do with the engine. I do not want to put a lot of money into a car, if it's the engine. Any ideas?

On some cars the water pump is driven by the timing belt (this is the case on our 95 Stratus 2.5 liter V-6) so it sounds to me like the water pump is now seeping in spite of what your mechanic said about the fitness of the pump. Further, most cars require a partial removal/relocation of various hang on items on the side of the engine the timing belt/water pump is on. These include alternator...power steering pump....AC compressor so a casual inspection of the water pump can be quite labor intensive. As to the drilled hole in the block, well it might have been partially drilled into the block (for some unknown reason) and only with age, continous expansion and contraction, and vibration has developed a crack at its deepest point and this hole coincides with a cooling water jacket area so now coolant is seeping out of this drilled hole whereas it never did before. As to repair...I would ask a Hyundai mechanic if this hole is a random misque by the automated machine that bores various tapped holes for all the stuff that eventually bolts to the block. Other than that ????

The dealership called this morning after looking at my car and had to replace the water pump, plus, in their description of things they did: pump assy-coolent, gasket-water pump, antifreeze (which was covered under the 10 year/100,000 mile warranty), timing belt tensioner, (under warranty), tensioner timing (under warranty), timing belt and serpentine belt tensioner, belt valve timing tensioner assy. They said in their description of why they had to change the timing & serpentine belts was because they were leaking. (Dealership charged $ 386.28 for parts & labor). I asked about the hole drilled into the block and they said it's a water pump weep hole.

sorry for such a late reply - i had timing belt replaced at 59,000 miles. i was coming up on 2nd timing belt change when it snapped. mileage was 114,500...thought i had about 5,000 kiles to go. but, now i just have a cobalt. and, not an xfe. New car is a POS and I don't mean point of sale! Hey, i didn't want to spend a lot of money; i thought i needed to have a car immediately...and it seemed ok at the time. i am not totally disappointed, however. i wanted a 4 cylinder and i needed transportation...i just rushed the decision making process and closed the deal.

I am having the exact same problem with my 2003 Sonata. It turns over but doesn't start right away and it seems to be getting worse. Has anyone come up with a solution to this problem?

This exact problem just started the last month on our 2003 Sonata. Today my wife reports it doesn't start at all.
Did you find out what the actual problem was?

I have a 2002 with a similar starting problem... I narrowed my problem down to the alarm / ignition kill system would not let the car start. The starter worked, the engine turned over but would not start. I never found the actual alarm setting to change (dealer only option) so I had a remote start system installed and that cured my problem (plus the wife now enjoys being able to start the car from inside the house on cold days).

I think I may have the solution to our starting problems. I do believe it is the fuel pressure regulator. Dealer says it will cost about $160.00 to have fixed. Warranty on this part is 5 years or 60,000 miles.

That's what I was kind of suggesting last week, that it sounded somewhat similar to the (more abrupt) way my 2003 had behaved... and the anti-theft system was the culprit.
