Thanks this is good to know. On the Hyundai website, they say:

- COOLANT: FOR THE FIRST TIME, REPLACE THE COOLANT AT 60,000 MILES (96,000 KM) OR 60 MONTHS, AFTER THAT, REPLACE IT EVEY 30,000 MILES (48,000) OR 24 MONTHS.

Nothin about "Transmission flush service", but Ill wait 60K.

What is T/U?

OEM for fluids means Hyundai has specific requirements for oil, coolant, brake fluid, and... MOST IMPORTANT: automatic transmission fluid. Hyundai uses a specific kind of transmission fluid (can't think offhand of the type) and you can ruin the transmission by using a different type. I have seen posts in Town Hall from owners who have done just that to their Hyundais.

The requirements are laid out in the owner's manual. Be sure if you do-it-yourself or use a non-dealer mechanic that you make sure the proper fluids are used.

Burning Smell from Car with 1,900 Miles by vzeeibor

My 2009 Hyundai Sonata GLS 4-door automatic has a burning smell that occurs periodically when driving and even remains after the car is turned off. A relative getting into the car after it had just been started asked if we had smoked in the car, which we hadn't.

I know they coat new Hyundais with something that makes a burning smell but was told this would burn off after a few hundred miles. The car has close to 2,000 miles now. It seems to smell in the front passenger area and around the wheel wells. We have brought it to the service department repeatedly but they claim not to smell anything.

Any ideas what it could be?

Sonata 2003 Starting Problems by msgdfx1

Hi, everyone.

A couple of months ago, I started to experience problems with starting my vehicle (Sonata 2003). At first I thought it was the starter, but, my husband believed that it was a fuel injector issue and described the problem as a "hard start".

Upon turning the key and attempting to start, the car would labor for about 5 - 10 seconds before either turning over or turning off altogether. This happened everytime I attempted to start the car. The only time it wouldn't happen was when I put fuel in the car.

So, I took the car to the dealership this week and described the problem. They ran a diagnostic test on the car and said that I needed a new fuel pump. I got the car out of the shop 2 days later with a new fuel pump.

The problem is that I seem to still experiencing the same problem. I can't believe it. When I take the car to be fixed, I expect it to be fixed.

In any case, I was wondering whether any other owners have had this experience. Or, whether anyone knows what could be causing this problem.

Thanks, in advance, for any comments.

I have a 2003 GLS V6 (and a VERY new 2009 GL I4 Auto). I've NEVER had this issue with the 2003... closest that happened is that after my son triggered the car alarm about two years ago, the alarm system shut the car down, and then "locked"... nothing (not the remotes, not the keys, NOTHING) would get the car to start, though it behaved close to the way you're describing otherwise (it just NEVER started, whereas by your description, yours sometimes starts, sometimes doesn't). Turned out the antitheft system had gone bad, and was locking the car down because it thought it was stolen (second time that's ever happened to me... my old 1989 Camaro did the same thing back in 1995). The dealer replaced the antitheft controller, and the car has been fine ever since. Wasn't in warrenty for us (we bought the 2003 used, and had passed the lower mileage limit for resold Hyundais; would have been covered if the car had been bought new by us, though), so it cost about $300. Don't know if that'll be helpful, but....

Gas spill when refueling by lcdos

Anyone have this problem before? When I put in gas, the nozzle does not stop on time, and gas spills out. It happened to me at different gas stations, so I suspect it is my car problem.

I took the sonata to dealer, and they said there is nothing in the car to stop the nozzle. If there were vent valve problem, it would prevent gas from getting in the tank. It would not cause gas spill.

2003 Sonata sedan V6 (hole in block) by lindalee65

I took my Sonata to my mechanic for routine maintenace. He found antifreeze leaking underneath the timing belt cover. Also, found a drilled hole in the block, which he can't explain. Said it had to come from factory. He has worked on other Hyundai's and he said he has never seen this before. He has checked the water pump, radiator, timing belt, everything okay. Said it's leaking behind the a/c compressor, passenger side. I always look underneath the car and never see any puddles. Mileage 91,000 all highway. Car has been faithful in oil changes every 3000 miles with the 60,000 maintenance. Car has never given any warnings or messages, runs great. I dropped it off at the dealership last night to have them take a look at it. My mechanic thinks whatever it is should be covered underneath the 100,000 mile warranty. He seems to think it has something to do with the engine. I do not want to put a lot of money into a car, if it's the engine. Any ideas?

On some cars the water pump is driven by the timing belt (this is the case on our 95 Stratus 2.5 liter V-6) so it sounds to me like the water pump is now seeping in spite of what your mechanic said about the fitness of the pump. Further, most cars require a partial removal/relocation of various hang on items on the side of the engine the timing belt/water pump is on. These include alternator...power steering pump....AC compressor so a casual inspection of the water pump can be quite labor intensive. As to the drilled hole in the block, well it might have been partially drilled into the block (for some unknown reason) and only with age, continous expansion and contraction, and vibration has developed a crack at its deepest point and this hole coincides with a cooling water jacket area so now coolant is seeping out of this drilled hole whereas it never did before. As to repair...I would ask a Hyundai mechanic if this hole is a random misque by the automated machine that bores various tapped holes for all the stuff that eventually bolts to the block. Other than that ????
